You have to do what will make you feel good. If you want the other stuff, thats the way to go for you. No point in worrying over what you have done. I have 150+ km on my X5 and no problems with my tranny. The biggest thing here, is doing the maintenance. This stuff isn't magic smoke and mirrors, sediment in oil equals wear, ( and plugs filters too.) I wish you good luck on your oil change There is lots of good help in this forum. Now go get greasy!

the transmission oil pan gasket never develops a leak,(unless it has been incorrectly installed priorly. It is the transmission connecter sleeve, also refered to as the Mekatroniks Sealing Sleeve that leaks, and covers the whole transmission oil pan with fluid. All BMW models with the ZF 6HPXX/ and 6HPXX/X to 04/08 trans will develope this leak at around 30K miles. When removing this connector, the o-rings can be either 3 differnt colors, if it is orange, it is the original design from the factory, the replacement a few years back, they were white o-rings. The current color o-rings available from spare parts department will be black. Consult a professional to do this repair for you, it is rather difficult to plug the connector in, especailly dry, and to lock it back in after seating it correctly. An issue can occur if the transmission connector is not seated correctly, and can permantly damage the pins of the computer. Which will cost $2,000-3,000 to replace and re-program.

The following parts will be needed.

24 34 7 588 725 Mechatronic sealing sleeve
24 11 7 543 484 6HP26 - oil pan gasket for E53 equipped with eight cylinder engine (N62) – X5 4.4i
83 22 0 406 929 Topping up fluid level with up to 1 liter of Shell M-1375.4 2

how did you finally fill the tranny oil?

zeroboot or anyone else.

How were you able to fill the tranny oil? I think I have the same tranny 2005 x5 4.4. I cannot find the fill plug. And my tranny pan looks like what zeroboot has posted.

I want to change the tranny oil but at a lost on how to refill it.

I ended up getting my replaced under CPO a few months later...the fill cap is actually the drain plug too on this one I seem to remember. You have to use a fluid pump to get the fluid in there. At the dealer, they claim to use a 'special' filling unit that screws into that location. The way the pan is shaped, when its full, some fluid will start to leak out of the top of the drain (the drain is not flush with the bottom of the pan but sticks up a bit). Likewise, if you were to 'drain' the transmission, and then remove the pan, there would still be quite a bit of fluid in there.
