It's for a garment hanger

That's what I thought it was but don't know how to use it.

its not a garment holder..I have tried to stick a clothes hanger in there and it dont fit....i think its a place where you can hang a cargo net of some sort...everyone that rides in my back seat ask me that questions..

BMW load space divider (pet barrier) fits in there.

There is also a garment rod that goes in there, I have seen it in several X5's and somewhere online, but I'm pretty sure it's aftermarket. There is also that divider that I believe is a BMW accessory part. I've been unsuccessful trying to find that garment rod online, but I'll keep searching.

It's the "load space divider" or "safety net". I got one of these way back - pretty handy when carrying bulky stuff in the back. It has 3 hooks that engage the tie-downs on the back of the rear sets just behind the headrests. Can be used with the seats foled down (net is full open) or with the seats up (net half open).

Will post a pic the next time I have it in the car.

Hay Caramba! Let's put this thread to bed . Here is a picture of the BMW load space divider that I had in my X5. I used it to keep my dog in the back. Please look carefully and notice where the divider is attached at the top corners into the recesses that are exposed when you slide those plastic covers back. The divider is very expensive, but extremely well engineered. Best to buy one used IMHO.
