More Electrical Gremlins

On my 2001 X5 4.4 .....

Last night I'm sitting in the the house when through the window I see the turn signals flash once and this beeping noise started. Sounded like a truck backing up. It was coming from the X5, I had never heard it before. It was very windy, I thought it might be the alarm going off. Didn't sound like an alarm though (don't know what the alarm sounds like to be honest, it's never gone off) and the turn signals had only flashed once. Anyway unlocking the car with the fob stopped the bleeping, I locked it again and that was the end of that.

This morning strange things started to happen. The monitor display on the radio periodically goes blank and seems to restart itself. The radio goes silent for a split second when that happens and comes back on again. This happens every 30 seconds or so .... but the interval doesn't seem to be constant.

Also the turn signal is behaving strangely. When I indicate left or right, it ticks and flashes away happily, but every maybe 10 flashes it seems to skip a beat and then back to normal. Sometimes when I cancel the turn signal it continues flashing for a second or two and then stops.

When I got back in the car after dropping my daughter off on the way to work, the monitor was doing the same thing but now the radio wasn't working. I deliberately switched off the monitor, but 5 minutes later it came back to life all by itself. I tried turning the radio on and hey presto - it worked.

I'm fairly long in the tooth when it comes to BMW electrical problems. Never seen strange behaviour like this before though.

Anyone seen this before ? Anyone have the foggiest what the hell is going on ??!

First step would be to try doing a battery reset for a few minutes to "reboot" all the computers and cross fingers that it snaps back into normal operating reality. Otherwise you may need to bring it in for an electrical diagnosis.

Mine was doing the same sorts of things for a while then the radio packed up completely. Next day flat battery.
Left it for a few days, put the battery on charge and now all clear. Radio works again and all the weirdness has stopped.

I've experienced similar issues on my '01 4.4 twice before - both times the culprit ended up being a faulty ignition switch. Dealer replaced ($118 for the part) and all electrical issues were remedied.

Mine never did the "backup beep" you described, but I did have issues with the radio randomly turning off (and always when my gf opened the passenger side visor vanity mirror). Also I had a SES & airbag & seat belt lights on the MID, button lights on steering wheel wouldn't come on, rear wiper would only work in increments (looked like a clock's second hand ticking), and the horn didn't work.

Hope this helps you narrow down your search for the cause!

Mmm ....

The thought of a dodgy ignition switch had crossed my mind. Another thing is that for a long time now, sometimes when I start the car the voice recognition lady comes along and keeps saying "sorry" ...... "sorry" ...... "sorry" ...... "cancel". I've almost gotten used to it and have started to ignore it. Now I'm wondering if this is caused by a malfunctioning ignition switch as well, and it's now getting worse.

I've heard that everything electrical in the X5's are routed through the ignition switch one way or another. Think I'll replace mine ....

Battery reset alot cheaper option to start with. i.e it's free.

Yep, kinda like turning off your computer for a minute when Windows acts up.

Was thinking of fitting a battery master switch and labelling it Ctrl/Alt/Delete

Funny concept! But at least these vehicles are more like Apple/Mac computers and don't have to be shut down often at all.
