The contact patches are the same size, but the narrower tire will have a different shape contact patch, with less width, and so will climb up easier into the snow at the leading edge. That used to matter more when snow tires drove primarily from the side lugs. These days, modern winter tires have sipes and drive over the full width. End result: in deep snow, the 17" are better, but in most winter conditions, there is little difference, given the same tire tread and rubber compound.

I've found the 18's worked perfect for me, 1 MPH difference in the speed read out as compared to my Android nav. I have Pirelli ice and snow tires and in WI make all the difference in the world.
As for the size, I don't know as JCL says, 17 or 18 would make any difference. I would think the 17 would be off a bit more on the speedo. JMO

If you get the correct OE sizes, there will be no difference in speedometer error between the 17" and 18".

I run style 130s, on my 04 4.4, with stock size 235/65/17 with studded snow tires. Just went through a nice storm in Seattle with no issues, and runs to the mountains are easy as pie. I used the same size tire and the same wheel as my spare... so no issues there. I used 17s because they are cheaper!

17"s are too small and ugly IMO for the X5. Go with 18" and even then they look out of place

I run the 255/55-18 snows on a set of 18x9 TSW wheels for winter. My Hankook IceBears have gotten me through two Chicago winters and have worked great even in the northwoods of Wisconsin in 2 feet of snow.
For the original poster, use your stock 18's and mount up the snows. Then get those 19 or 20" summer wheels and tires in the spring. Having 2 sets of wheels and tires is the ideal way to go up in MN.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll get some winter tires for my stock 18's and get something for summer. Any suggestions on winter tires? I was thinking about the pirelli ice and snow. Thanks, Mike

The only real difference between 17" & 18" rims is the brake clearance. If you replace the front brakes with the larger ones found on the 4.8 model, you need the 18" rims. This is something I really should have thought of before buying my 17" setup. Running autocross with my X5, I'd really like to install the larger front brakes. oh well, one step forward, two steps back.
