I think you are only supposed to pull the backing off of the adhesive slightly, just so it's long enough to stick out from underneath the seal. Once the seal is seated fully, you can then pull the rest of the adhesive backing off from underneath, and press down to form the seal. I haven't done it personally yet, but from the write-ups I have seen that seems to work.

Hopefully that is helpful to others looking to do the same.

I just did mine, it was super easy, heck I was in pj and did it 10 minutes. I used a pick set to getting the old one out. Got it pulled up on one side and carefully pulled it out. Then I cleaned out the groove really good. Then from the drivers side I pulled the weather stripping from the door so I could slide the new one in. Get some dish soap and run it long the groove and lube it up good, and I mean a lot of soap. Start pushing it in, just a little at time. You will have about a foot to go and it will be really hard to push in, take a dead blow hammer And hold the weather striping with your hand wrapped around it firmly and tap slowly until it is in place and then clean up your soap and replace the door weather stripping.

So from all the threads recently, we can be sure of 3 things:

1) Do this on your NON ORIGINAL windshield at your own risk, it will be tougher than if your windshield is original

2) Get the molding loose from the corner of the windshield and be careful not to pry against the glass unless you want to crack it

3) Lube up your install channel and the edge of the glass after its cleaned out and before you slide the new molding in, work it from one side to the other and use a putty knife or trim tool to push it into place completely

For 18 bucks I'll most likely buy the piece and take my time installing it over the next few months, I emailed Safelite yesterday and of course off the top of their head they aren't familiar with it and would like me to bring my X in to look at the windshield.

I think I'll have better luck myself.

I would use a professional installation if it was on their nickel if they broke the windshield and the price was reasonable.

That's perfect! Thanks so much for making that man, much more visual so once the process is explained it makes it so much easier for me.

Ill grab a set of trim tools from harbor freight and have a go at this in the coming weeks!

Thanks for the video. At first I couldnt believe that the X5 trim is harder since we only have the top part. The E39 shares this same issue and the windshield trim has top and both A-pillars.

Anyone have the part# handy?

I just fixed this yesterday. I actually took this piece off at the dealership.....meaning when I was going back to the car after purchasing the new piece, I decided to "take a look at it" and ended up peeling out the entire piece in 2 seconds. I kinda sorta peeled it "back" after seeing how the new piece is designed. There is a metal strip thats built into the rubber which "grabs" the windshield EDGE. So you dont want to pull UP as you might crack the windshield edge.....you want to pull BACK AND AWAY.....kind of like pulling towards the back of the car once you get one edge to loosen up.
