Advice on a 2004 4.8is potential purchase

I would like some advice on those that have had a 4.8is and have high mileage. What type of issues have you had? I have looked over the threads and it seems lots of issues with the air suspension.

Also what are these going for? What would a 2004 with 75K miles run in your opinion? Also would this qualify for an extended warranty if so what is a good one and what would I expect to buy.

Hopefully a few people in here have had theirs for years and can provide some input for me.

Rich,

I am in a similar situation as you are. From what I have read the air suspension is an easy fix with coil springs. I'm having trouble between the 4.4 and 3.0. The 3.0 is easier to work on and seems to be rock solid. Something about the 4.4 in cold weather acting funny. There seems to be issues with window motors that seem to happen in all models.

What do you think of this:

2005 BMW X5 4.8is in Orlando, FL- 6741353 at carmax.com

I bought a carmax car about 10 years ago their cars seem to be really good but a bit higher in price.

Great looking car. I have heard good things about carmax as well. There is a similar car for sale near me (same year and mileage) for $25k. I think anywhere between $25k and $30k is where these have been selling.

I've read that to keep the window motors running well, roll down all your windows once in awhile.

Have you checked the carfax on that vehicle? The badging in the wrong place on the rear hatch is usually a good indication of a rear end accident and a poor repair job. I could be completely wrong too.

Honestly I've tried dealing with carmax before and ended up walking out. My thoughts are their cars are overpriced and the majority that I looked at were fair to poor quality.

I went and test drove a local 2004 4.8is and really liked it but all the damn buttons and such scared me in terms of things going bad over the years. Love the way the car handled as BMW's are like no other car. Power was good not blown away like I was expecting.

Think I am going to pass on the 4.8is all together. Oh by the way the tires for these 20 inch rimes must be insane. The one I drove needed two new back tires.
