plus the 4.6is has regular springs in the front vs. airbags on the 4.8is, so one less item to fail there. I have not driven a 4.8is, so cannot compare them. I did drive a facelift 4.4i however. The 4.6is was a lot better. Probably can't go wrong with either a 4.8is or 4.6is - get the best cared for example you can find of either one is my take.

I am going to take a look at this over the weekend:
2002 BMW X5 4.6is Guy originally listed for 21K then dropped to $17999. I spoke with him and it seems like he took very good care of it. Will go over the service records when I get it and have a friend at BMW run the VIN and get a detailed complete service history if I am interested after looking at it. Really don't want something this old and with that many miles but worth a check if taken care of and I can get a good deal. Any concerns of buying one with this many miles. I see many posts with people buying them with higher miles and seems like no one has really got stuck with lots of repairs. I would get a Pre Purchase inspection done on it as well if serious. |

Unless you are going for a sub 50K mile example, I'd say get the best cared for, nicest condition one for the cheapest price and don't worry so much about miles.

Higher mileage isn't a bad thing. Look at it this way, if the car has low mileage, you are guaranteed to have to do repairs at some point. With high mileage, you have a 50/50 shot of it being done already or needing. |

The guy had the car for 4 years and it had a 7 yr 100K warranty through BMW that expired in 2009 so everything is documented.
On another note what is up with these rims on this one as I dont think they but these on the 4.8is model: BMW : X5 - eBay (item 180608907790 end time Jan-12-11 11:44:09 PST) |

I dunno what they stole those rims off of (A Jeep?) but they don't belong there! Pass...

ya no kidding. Hmm maybe a big red flag not to buy!
Ebay has so many cars that are messed up, repos, salvaged, or just plain trashed. |

Test drive
I test drove this 2004 4.8 Woodbridge X5 about three weeks ago. Looked clean. Lots of aftermarket additions, some very nice, some not so much - air filter (good), BSW subwoofer (good), second spoiler (bad), tow hitch (good), dark window tinting (bad), weathertech floor mates (good). However, its had three previous owners. Also, I took the X5 on Rt 95 and dove it hard. When driving over 70, hard breaking caused the front wheels to shimmy to the point of making it difficult to maintain control. It could be the control arms, ball joints, maybe rotors. But with the high mileage and the number of owners, my gut told me to avoid it. I did. I'm still looking. It did look clean though.

I drove that same car and did not drive it that hard so I could not tell the issues you had. The Manager at the dealership is unwilling to budge at all on the price as I just did not have good feeling about the car.
After driving it I really decided if I was going to go with a 4.6is or 4.8is I was only going to buy from a private owner. These places are all about making money so very hard to get a good deal while they are trying to make thousands. |
