ECU(Electronic Control Unit) is the same as ECM (Electronic Control Module),differents words for the same thing.
However, even if your X5 was prepared for ECU re-mapping ,it wouldnt be via this plug! This would be done via the OBD2 plug or directly flashing to ECU eprom.
Going back to you original question,I cant find anything on my car(I have oem Nav) that looks like the plug in your picture and I agree with Helmuths observation because it does look like a Centronics printer plug..
I did find a photo which I download from here a while ago,so its a photo of a members cars, and this also has the same plug and no NAV...hope it helps..

It's for a "Proton accelerator". It links up with your neutron deflibulator, to produce gamma and alpha rays that burn off excess carbon molecules during the moligation process. lol just kidding!!!!

I just put a aftermarket amp in my X5. I did not have GPS. But the wires are there anyway. I would guess that it is cheaper to just wire up all X5's with everything even if it's not used. The organization and effort needed to wire it up (early in the assembly process) only for the options it has is probably more expensive.

And I would bet that the customer is paying for the wires.... used or not, lol.

Found it!
The 25pin DB plug shown. if you have this connector, your vehicle is prewired for the BMW CPT phone (Option 640A). This will plug in to the adapter that came with the kit from bmw bluetooth.

Not sure if you want to do that. Seems you have to take half of your X apart.
But the plug is in that writeup.

Good shot powers1
