I bet it was this
I bet the reason was frozen breather tube. When it freezes, the engine always injects the oil out. Before it happens, a lot of white smoke comes out and after few seconds, the failure happens. Usually there's a nasty "burned oil" smell.
I had it happening 2 times this winter. Especially with older engines, they start "breathing" more. When it happens, the moisture comes to the tube and when it is cold it starts to freeze.
After the second failure, I installed a specific electrical warmer around the tube which should keep it always open.
