Yep, traded my '03 X5 on a new 2011 Subaru Legacy sedan. This is my sixth Subie. And it's kinda funny b/c after reading all these posts about this problem and that problem, I am actually glad I traded mine off. Don't get me wrong, BMW makes a wonderful vehicle; just costly to maintain/repair/operate as evidenced in all these threads. I mean, like some of these threads are some really big issues. The Subaru forums I've read are for dumb things like squeaks/rattles and knobs coming off. But nothing major like what's listed on some of these posts.
But, hey, it's was a fun ride while it lasted. So now we are a Subaru family with a 2010 Subaru Outback wagon and my 2011 Legacy.

By the way, while driving my subie yesterday, I moved to the right and let the bimmer go by.

Congratulations. Subaru's are great cars. I had a 1997 Outback which was a fantastic car.

Well, there is a premium to be paid for driving a BMW. Either purchase costs for a new one or maintenance costs on an 8 year old model, such as your X5. In the end you are right though, the cost of owning a BMW will be higher than a Subaru. For many, the cost is worth it. To me, the fun of driving a BMW compared to a Subaru is much greater than the financial savings I would get by owning the Subaru. I understand if it is not worth it to you. BMW's aren't for everyone. You have to find your balance of cost and enjoyment and it sounds like you did just that. Certain things are worth it to me though. For example sometimes when I see our e53 4.4i sport package in a parking lot or a driveway I still do a double take because it looks so good, or when I step on the throttle and the sound of the throaty V8 grabs my attention, or when I take a curve just a little too fast without drama. I would gladly pay a little more for these experiences.

With 204K miles, I have found the less preventive maintenance I do to it, the less repairs I have. At this point, the next expensive repair will determine when mine goes.

Good for you; sounds like a good choice. I should have kept my M5 and just towed my 4k trailer with it instead of keeping the X5. My X3 and M5 experience tricked me into thinking an X5 might be reasonably reliable. It isn't.

My neighbour's two-year Subaru Forester just blew a head gasket. I have another friend with a Subaru Forester who's car has been in for brake repairs half a dozen times since new three years back. All cars can have problems but good luck.

Subaru = head gasket. Doesn't sound like BMW was the right car for you. If reliability is paramount, you should become a member of Toyota forums.
