You can just change the bulb if you want.

you just need a bulb. let me dig up one of my old threads

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...yes-today.html

thats what i did. On the 04-06 models its just a bulb, on any previous models you need to install the rings.

Like I said, just the bulb. It is the same socket, just that it has bright LEDs fitted inside, instead of the halogen bulb. And another related thread came up to the surface: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...s-message.html

The kit I have on my 2005 X5 is from HIDS4U and is a simple plug an play. No errors are thrown at all. The only thing I see is the cold lamp check causes them to flash a few times on startup but after that they're fine. Though good at night, they are not as bright as the current E70 DRL system as that uses an LED array to generate the light level seen.

I want the same effect on my 2011 X6, but as yet they are only supplied with the H8 lamp and LED DRL's cannot be retrofitted. In due course there may be a new lamp unit, but it will probably be the facelift/LCI that the X6 is due and therefore won't fit!
