look at this thread http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...em-dsp-x5.html also there was another DIY guide that another user did. The harness for DSP and no dsp are different. Plus you would also have to purchase the dsp subwoofer and depending on the year ya may have to get the fiberoptic cables if your x is not prewired. The mid needs to connect to a dsp amp. so you would have to replace your oem amp with a dsp one. then have it coded to your x.
I know all this because I am conteplating swapping to and retrofitting a dsp nav from stock mid.

thanks you just saved me $100. would you also happen to know if the wiring harness that goes to the MID for non dsp cars has changed over the e53 years.I'm assuming yes because i noticed that X's before 2003 can't be equipped with aux inputs

Actually, the DSP and non-DSP cars have exactly the same _headunit_. So yeah, you can go ahead and purchase the headunit.

The reason is quite simple - the headunit only displays information (and sends some ibus telegrams based on the buttons you press), it is not in charge of any sound output/processing/whatever.
If you still think their is a "special DSP onboard monitor", you should check out ETK or realoem, to see there is no "DSP" and "non DSP" part numbers for the headunit (should be in the Audio, Navigation, Electronic Systems section).
