That said, there is a place for the X5 especially up here in the cold, snowy north.

To the OP, perhaps you could give us some insight into what you are looking for and help us answer your question a bit more accurately. Are you asking about what to expect from a driving experience or from a maintenance perspective?
Unibody is unibody.

maintenance - same motor and tranny as your X5. same problems and frustrations. unless you have a 3.0 and then the V8's are mildly more problematic.

driving - truck vs car.

good luck. have you posted on a forum that represents the e60 5 series?

I have no experience with the E60's, only the E39's. I'm guessing the newer models should handle at least as well as the previous generation plus a few technology upgrades. They would be heavier though. Style wise, I prefer the E39, more classic BMW look and better visibility.

As for truck v. car, I'm biased towards cars. Far better handling, ride, and fun. My X5 is really just a utility vehicle in comparison. If you're looking at either a 545 or 550, have you considered an E39 M5?

I always thought the 550's cost quite a bit more than the E39 M5 but then again, I'm not looking and don't know current pricing. Good luck, my guess is you'll enjoy the 550.
