Technically..... you already have a 5 series.

The only difference is AWD. It's just a jacked up E39.

the BMW E39 5-series; specifically the Engine and electronic system. The entire in car entertainment system (Radio Function, Navigation System, Television and Telecommunications systems, and very flexile automotive computer system ) are identical.
I don't know how much different the E60 is.

545 isn't worth it. If you want a 5 series, boot up the cash for a 550. Better car all day long.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that it isn't worth it. The main difference is the year, 05 was the last 545 then changed to 550. 550 has 35 more hp, if that is worth the extra cost then yep go for it. I would be more interested in a well maintained 545 with all records and clean than just any 550 just because it is a 550.
I had a chance to get an 06 X5 for only 5G more than my 03. The 03 was immaculate while the 06 looked as though a tornado hit the interior.

I don't think my post stated just taking any old 550 that comes along, hence the statement "boot up the cash". Once again, the 550 is a better car from all angles. IMO, it is a far better choice, that is all.

While the E53 shares many similarities with the E39, it is mainly in the individual components. The overall difference is far more than just a jacked up E39. After all, the E53 is a TRUCK while the E39 is a sport sedan. For pure driving enjoyment I would prefer my sedan over my truck any day. That said, there is a place for the X5 especially up here in the cold, snowy north.

To the OP, perhaps you could give us some insight into what you are looking for and help us answer your question a bit more accurately. Are you asking about what to expect from a driving experience or from a maintenance perspective?

The two major issues on 545i/550i:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/att...5&d=1268167349
and

SIB240309, need S/W update for trans lurching problem.
NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE RECEIVED 5-15-09 - 5 Series Forums

In any rate get the sport package, it has hydrolic Anti-Roll Stability ARS system, it makes E60 one of the best handling in it's class. This is not available in XI trim so make sure you can live w/o AWD in winter.

Good luck.

you do know that the first SIB you linked is for 6 cylinder engines only right? not the V8's that are aforementioned.

Sorry, that was wrong SIB but the 545i known to have lever issue, some work was goodwill by BMW but no guarantee so OP need to listen to engine during idle to make sure ticking noise from engine 545i - bimmerfest - BMW Forums.
