Swap a MID w/o BC button for one which does?

Hi all.
I've got the dreaded dead pixels issue on my MID which does not have the BC option/button (just clock button)
and I'm wondering if I was to buy a refurbished jobbie WITH the BC option/button on the MID, will I now have those features, OR will this MID require more wires/harnesses that my current MID does not supply/use?

Also, I've tried searching this, but I'm not sure if its just a limitation to my SUV, but I have the speedo dash with text capability, BUT when I cycle through the BC button on the signal stalk, I only get three items to see. Consumption, Gas milage left and one other...

Can I not see all the other features, like Timer, Aux Ventilation, Code... etc cause my current MID does not have the BC button/option?
And Would I get those features IF I upgraded to the MID which does have that BC button/option?

your configuration should have a BC button on your MID if you have the text display instrument cluster. Holding the BC stalk button should show PROG on the text display and the on the MID should you be able to program which BC functions to display.

Thanx again for answering this older thread Killcrap. I agree. I have a feeling it should have the MID with a clock/BC button too.
I am tryin to track one down on e-bay/other sites but no one seems to be selling the part ending in ...610 which is specific to the X5. I have the one ending in part # ...606 for some reason

Did you end up putting n a MID with a BC button ? I think I am in the same situation. BC button on signal and cluster shows info but not on the MID, pixels are going bad and searching for a replacement.

Thanks

Meatzeet, I bought and installed an E53 MID with a BC button and no I did not get the extra features added to my dashboard display. I still only get the "fuel range, avg speed and avg fuel used" even WITH BMW flashing the X5 to say that I had a BC capable MID. Guess its more than just buying a BC capable MID
I gave up.

Sory to open an old thread

Just curious as I have the same initial setup and I have figured out how to add and remove the dash readout of obc items, but I can not access / reset consumption 1 or 2 or activate any of the obc items on my mid. If I start the car and without touching the mid hold in the button on the turn signal stalk and hold it the mid shows all options I can add to the dash display. I am curious if when you added the BC button on the MID (by replacing it) does the BC button do ANYTHING? Can you pull up your consumption and such???

How did you manage to get radio/MID's info to show up on the OCD (cluster) display)?

I took the BC button MID/radio out and its sitting on a shelf while my OE non BC button mid/radio is back in the vehicle again.

If you tell me how to get the extra features to show up on my cluster display, I'll go swap the BC button MID/radio and test for you..

if you have the high cluster (20 digit alpha/numeric display) and high MID (BC button next to clock face icon on bottom right button)...you must program the OBC features you want to appear in the cluster.

The main display for the OBC is the MID as well as being the place where the OBC is set/reset/started/stopped/etc.

To program which OBC features you want to "view" in the cluster...press & hold the BC button on the tip of the turn signal stalk until PROG appears in the display. You then press the buttons on the MID to select what you want...each selection will advance the display to show Prog1, PROG2, PROG3, etc. The order in which you select, will be the order they appear. When done...press the SET button at the far right of the MID. If you want all the OBC features to appear in the cluster...when you see PROG appear...immediately press the SET button on the MID.

To set the clock or other TIME events...you press the clock face icon to change the MID's screen to that feature. Again you press the SET button to initiate and save changes. Same goes for setting the date...press the correct MID button that shows the date...then select the SET button to initiate changes...then press the SET button again to save your changes.

As stated already...the MID is where everything is controlled...so if you want to reset the MPG or MPH...then you call up the screen on the MID...then use the SET BUTTON. The turn signal stalk only allows you to call up what's programmed & Scroll through what you've put in. To reset, start, stop,etc...requires doing it from the MID (or nav screen)

The only ones that can reset from the turn signal stalk or those with the low cluster & low MID...but they don't have the extended OBC features nor the ability to call up the OBC in their MID...there OBC is only called up by the turn indicator BC button and appears only on their cluster, and is reset using the stalk button.

Here's the instructions from my e38 owners manual...which applies to the e39 & e53 with high cluster/high MID:

The BC button on the MID controls EVERYTHING...or at least the MID controls everything. The BC button on the stalk only calls up the features you programmed to appear in the cluster...and scrolls to the next feature...that's all it does with the high cluster/high MID set up (and nav screen). To set, reset, start, stop any OBC feature...it is down thru the MID or nav screen.

Audio Screen:

Clock/Timer/Date Screen: {"VENT ON" only appears when ignition is in position 1}

BC Screen:

Qsilver, I remember we spoke about this a bunch a few years ago and it was just determined my Canadian X5 which has the high level cluster but a non BC button MID just will not show anything other than Speed/Consumption/Range when I press the BC stalk button.
Even when i borrowed an x5's MID with the BC button, my digital cluster display would still not shows anything, so it must be a coding thing.
I've learned to live without honestly.
