Drove the beast in the snow

there's about 4-6 inches on the ground and my x handled beautifully without snow tires. I couldn't of made a better choice about purchasing my x

Wow, I'm having big problems controlling my X on the snow with the stock 19". My biggest problem is actually stopping. It just keeps on skidding almost defying laws of physics....and all you need is just a bit of snow.
Can't wait for my snow tires to come in. i have to wait another week before they come in. I'm putting on pirelli scorpions ice on the 19" 132's. we'll see what happens.

X5 + winter wheels = :-)

Drove in ~5 inches of snow this morning. Incredible with the winter package that I got from tire rack (17" with Dunlop Grand trek). In all kinds of unplowed roads, up and down hills, cornering, stopping etc. the ABS only activated a very few times. It drives almost as if there is no snow whatsoever on the ground - incredible!!!.
Compared with other 4x4's that I have owned or driven - pathfinder, cherokee, blazer - the X5 blows them away.
Of course I have to still worry about all the other a-holes on the road running in to me.

(I do miss the look of my summers - 132's with diamaris)

I am heading into the office in a few minutes. I live in the 'back country' and the roads look horrible. My driveway is curved, on an incline, and it has over 5" of snow on it at the moment with more falling fast. Should be no problem getting out of here in my X with 17" 57s sporting Dunlop snows. In case you don't hear from me by noon, send out the dogsled! Otherwise, I'll report in when I get to the office.

Just got in to work myself... the roads I took (Rt. 1/9, NJ turnpike, I-78, etc.) were pretty nasty. There were several vehicles stuck on the side in drifts, pressed up against guard rails, and such. There were areas on 78 where the snow wasn't plowed at all - just deep ruts from vehicles driving through; at a few points I passed 18-wheelers helplessly stuck, spinning their wheels trying to claw up mild hills. Everyone was going REALLY slow, so it took forever to get here, but it was a blast! The X was really solid and confident - especially considering I was on the stock 18" Michelin all-seasons They don't do the X any favors - particularly when braking - but overall I had no problems at all. I was just patiently picking my way through the crawling traffic, occasionally sneaking over into the unplowed far-right lane to get by someone really pathetic, and I was smiling all the way!!

But I do think I will get right to ordering some real snow tires. I'm trying to decide between the Pirellis (Scorpian Snow/Ice) and the Nokians... I've heard several positive things about both, but has anyone driven both and have an opinion about which is better all around?

I made it. It was fun as heck out there. My Dunlop snows are awesome. The back roads were covered by 6+ inches and I made mincemeat out of them. I think I'll go out for lunch.
