I drove my 3.0 for 7 years and 100K miles. It wasn't worry free by any means, but proper (old school) maintenance, a keen eye for trouble and replacing troubled parts at the first sign of wear or even preventively will treat you to years of service in one of the safest vehicles around.

It never left me on the side of the road, but I did limp it into the shop once or twice.

BTW, If it is your wife's daily driver I wouldn't add 22's - ride will be a lot rougher....but to each their own.

Yeah, funny thing is, my wife wants the 22s on it. She loves sports cars and that look. Before the baby and before we got married I had a 2001 NSX and the M3 and she loved those cars.

Our 07 Tahoe and 08 Lexus are worry free. Bought them both brand new and to this day, no feeling of "what if" even though it's bound to happen. Not one day of stress thinking about either car.

2nd day with X5 and I already have the "what did we get ourselves into" feeling. =/

First things first, gotta get an extended warranty.

Cooooool! I just bought some chrome 22" AC Schnitzer Type II wheels for my black 4.6is, have to lower it after I put the wheels on.

It is a car to love Don't worry. Yes, it is problematic, but keep an eye for problems and fix them when they appear, thats all. I drove mine all the time without a problem, I had to stop only once when the belt got off because bolt was broken due to hard hit somewhere. No lights are the thing.
Just for the peace of your mind, I drove all summer with timings off, Old rear air suspension air bag, with faulty DSC Module, and somewhat scwred up tranny. Got back from sea trip fixed everything, no problem.

If you don't buy the warranty, I would recommend setting aside some money in a bank account for repairs because you are likely to have more than a few at that mileage. Unfortunately, that is when things start going downhill. We bought our 02 4.4i with 65,000 miles and have had a TON of work done between 65,000 and about 100,000. Alternator, fuel pump, power steering hoses, radiator, thrust rod bushings, valve cover gaskets, motor mounts, window regulators, A/C work, valley pan gaskets, a couple other engine seals, etc. I bought the warranty and was very glad I did. I would estimate the work we had done under warranty at $8,500+.

I would strongly consider the warranty at your mileage if you are fairly certain you will put on more miles than the warranty covers. Otherwise, if you don't drive much and the warranty will more than likely expire on the number of years, I would start a repair savings account. The other factor is how much of the repiars you can do yourself. If you can't do that much and plan on taking the car to the dealer, the warranty starts to look better.

I strongly suggest getting an extended warranty. In two years of owning my X5 - I've had the well known transmission problems...And this repair alone makes the warranty worth the price.

My truck doesn't qualify for the BMW extended warranty cause I bought it at ford dealership.

I purchased my 2006 x5 4.4i a few weeks back. I didn't think twice about getting the extended warranty. It did cost me $1600, but is good for an additional 100,000 miles. I bought mine at a Mazda dealership.
