Well, I didn't end up taking it to the dealer as the day I was going over there, the CEL went off and I didn't feel like taking the 50-50 chance that the diag couldn't be done accurately. Flippin' car is messin' with me now. haha.

My indy however is working diligently to try to get it resolved. It was in all day Friday. He replaced the fuel filter, tested fuel pressure before and after the replacement (same, 50psi) and updated the DME software. Although the car said it had the most up to date software already, after the update he noticed a few version numbers changed. He also looked at the multiplicative values and they're below 1.0. He said he's seen cars go 3-4 and have no light. He said the lights get tripped typically around 8.0 so he's not sure why it's coming on.

So right now he's cleared the codes (BMW 235 & 236 - we've now abandoned the P codes out as part of troubleshooting) and I'm going to drive it around for a while to see what comes of it.

So far - all is well. It's finally passed inspection and I've put almost 800 miles on it. Adaptive values are now at 0.25. Seems the software update did the trick. Could it have been the fuel filter? Maybe but most likely it was the software. I am a happy camper.

Finally got mine to pass inspection yesterday. 2001 x5 3.0. Replaced idle control arm, p0505. had cleaned this last year that made the code go away. Replaced disa after realizing the flap was supposed to have some resistance, mine didn't it was broke. Replaced small hoses at rear of engine that come off the secondary air pump regulator. Its in shape to sell but the wife wont let me! was going to trade up for a newer model but shes on the dave ramsey plan no debt allowed!

Well.. i was a happy camper. Made it about 2K miles and the light came back on. It's now throwing errors about mixture control being too rich and shadow codes of misfires in cyl 5&6. I've swapped the 5&6 coil pack with 1&2. We'll see if the codes move. Ugh.. the neverending story I call this...

Still on this war path although the bleeding is slow and painful.

I've since replaced all coil packs and the crank position sensor along with the OE BMW plugs (NGK).

At the end of the day I'm still left with the rich codes. I swapped in my brother's MAF from his 330ci and after a quick drive I came up with a host of errors including misfires. I then swapped coil packs and the misfires followed on 2 cylinders so I just replaced them all. While running the scanner in KOEO (key in, engine off), I tried to start it and saw a code pop up referring to the crank position sensor (signal implausible). So I replaced that. After replacing that I saw something I hadn't seen in a long time, condensate coming out of the tail pipe! It has typically been sooty deposits on the pipes.

Anyhow, even with all that, I'm still left with the rich codes. I've tried running the car with and without the MAF but it runs the same! Just without the MAF plugged in it goes into TRANS FAILSAFE PROG which I expected but still idles just fine.

My gas mileage at this point is 19.2 combined with about 50% highway/city so I really have nothing to complain about there.

I've booked it into BMW service (last time I tried the flippin' light didn't come on!) for the 18th of January. I'm really at a loss here. I have yet to actually test the O2s as someone mentioned that it is possible I could've fouled it if I hadn't resolved my problem with the misfires earlier on and just replaced them.

I'm really considering selling it just because of this but I know its such a good vehicle other than the friggin light keeps popping on every so often. And the repeatability of it is nuts. With the SES on, If I do a cold start, drive about 2-3 miles, shut it off, drive back about 2-3 miles then start it up again on the 3rd start, the SES light will go off. As I pondered on this I attributed it to the secondary air pump working during that time and reducing the 'richness' of the o2 signal so with the few starts and driving, it might think the problem went away. Again...

Finally broke down and took it to the dealer. They sent the info off to BMW as the tech and foreman couldn't make sense of it. BMW came back and said the data depicts the car taking too long to get to operating temperature thus running rich. They suspected a thermostat leaking internally. I'm going to do a partial cooling system refresh (coolant temp sensor, upper and lower hoses, water pump & thermostat) and see how that plays out.

As for the short trip scenario, the explanation was that while cold, the DME is in agreement that the engine should be running rich and upon those few starts, sees no problem. It isn't however until a longer trip when it determines that it's been running rich for too long and throws up the code.

Well the cooling system flush, thermostat, water pump and hoses did not resolve the issue. The codes cleared on their own with the short trips but as soon as a longer trip (>5mi) happened, it came right back! I'm at a loss. At this point I could just trade it in but I think instead of getting into another car payment, I'm just going to continue driving it! There really is nothing wrong with the way it drives.

Just wondering if you ever resolved this issue?

PS, I've actually got the exact same color combination (Schwartz Black/Truffle Brown 3.0i with tinted windows)...
