Weasel will become famous soon enough
The engine fan is a fully separate circuit from the AC blower. And though a better design, the new ones can still go out. If I remember right there was a second redesign that looked similar to the first redesign with the small straight cooling fins, but had plastic on the housing instead of epoxy.

Thanks for confirming that, Weasel. It seems likely that it is the blower motor resistor (FSR) or something in that circuit since removing the fuse stops the draw on the battery. I can't remember if the replacement FSR had epoxy or plastic. I'll update the thread if I figure out the problem.

good thing you have a charger handy. I suggest buying one of those battery cutoff add-ons so youre left with enough juice to start the car while youre working things out

That's a good idea, thanks. For now, I just remove the 50A fuse when I stop the car. My mechanic is on vacation. Fortunately, I don't need the X5 that often (28k mostly highway miles in 7 3/4 years).

Update: Changed the FSR today and it seems to have fixed the problem. So the battery probably wasn't bad... was trying to make it last for 8 years, ah well!

My experience with the FSR is that once it's gone all kinds of electronic faults show up most of which are unpredictable. I took out fuse #64 to stop the blower running but the battery still drained. The only thing that worked was disconnecting the FSR. I then replaced it. Numerous posts here indicate the FSR goes fairly frequently so I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's your problem.
