Those look like brake-cooling ducts. They are both OPEN on mine. |

All 3.0D E53,mine including, have both covered.
I dont have a V8 X5 here to check but Last5oh,has a point ,they maybe to cool the brakes on the V8 models. Hopefully ,someone else will confirm. |

Mine are open and I instantly assumed for cooling the brakes. I too have a v8.
