you're right it all depends on the condition of the car. in his sig though the car looks bad ass.

I just did mine Ordered new extended shaft from a place in FL - $450 + $12 s&h(PM me for more details). No core return. I didn't replace the sprocket($325).

A flex head ratcheting size 10 wrench would have made the bolts on the transfer case easier to remove.

Had the wife's 3 in for service recently and was thinking the same thing. A lot of money to spend on a high mileage car to keep it going. The dealer offered us $6500 as a trade in. A 2002 with 100K is worth $6500 and it needs $2k worth of repairs? Not sure many makes hold their value like that.

We decided to keep hers since $2K per year is still less than a monthly payment and she likes her E46 better than the new ones anyway.

It sounds like your X has to go no matter what. Just find a nice CPO 3 for her to drive. They get good mileage and you still get to drive a BMW on occasion.

Love those Jeep GC's btw.

X5Dawg, look into what JCL said. If you can patch it up a little cheaper, it may be worth doing. All cars will get to a point where repairs cost more than car's market value, but if you have maintained it well, it may be worth keeping. Some people will just keep fixing the issues on their current car regardless of market value instead of going back to monthly car payments with increased insurance rates.

this is an interesting debate, here we have a fellow who has a vehicle he likes probably owns and thinks he's better off selling it because he has a potential $6k repair.

and then will go out and spend, what! $20/$30k for another vehicle (or much more), and if its a used vehicle, it may well also need stuff done.

seems silly to me, if he likes the style and comfort and performance of his current ride and has no finance, why wouldn't you just repair it and count your self lucky your not making monthly finance repayments

just my thoughts, maybe im just gettin old, but i fail to see the value of just opting out of one and jumping into another

although the fuel economy reason is valid

I think Cobra transmission sells the rebuild kit for the Xfer case. I have a ratcheting sound during WOT launch from the front end that is not the spline, I need to buy the kit and do the rebuild @ 135k miles.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the opinions/ comments. I actually looked at the threads regarding the repair for the TC right after the mechanic told me about it. He mentioned this was the 3rd or 4th one he has seen recently with this issue. Guess I just know there are other things coming up with it that will be added expenses - all of those things I repaired/ replaced around 100K obviously will need to be done again soon. And truthfully it is a hassle to take this thing to the shop because we don't have an indy German repair shop close to us and the one that I am using does not have loaners, so I have to rent a car everytime it goes in. Guess I miss the good ol' days when I would take it to the dealer, they would give me a loaner, and repairs were covered unless they were routine maintenance items.
