Anyone know what this is?
Hi all,
Just finished the drivers side valve cover gasket on my UK '01 4.4, about to start the passenger side when I came across this plastic conduit wrapped around the cover. I tried loosening it to slide it out of the way enough to gain decent access for the removal of the cover, but its not happening! Does anybody have any idea what it is and how I can move it out of the way with minimum fuss? Thanks. |

That is the power wire to the alternator. One side goes to the alternator and can be unbolted and moved, the other side goes under the intake and turns up to the positive jump point. Unbolt the jump point first to de-energize it (so it won't arc off if you hit anything) then take the other side loose from the alternator so you can move it over out of the way.

You'd be amazed how many people do! I get PM's on a daily basis, sometimes multiple people per day! (one of the reasons I stay as a premier member, no full inboxes!)

Ok, so I decided not to PM you- I'd rather let you find this is in your own time
![]() Just a quickie regarding the alternator terminal: Is it easier to disconnect from underneath? I ask because it looks awkward from above, but then again I dont have to jack the car and remove the splashguard.. ![]() Thanks Weasel. |

I'm running into the same conduit doing my V/C job...though on the driver's side since I'm in the US, of course.
Isambard, did this advice help with your job? I followed the conduit and saw that it was connected to the alternator, but it seemed to split into a T with one arm going to the alternator, the other up over the valve cover, and a third heading somewhere down the block where I was unable to see (starter perhaps?). I didn't want to deal with unbolting it from the alternator only to find out that doing so wouldn't provide me enough slack to remove the valve cover. Also because I'd already spent about 7 hours working on the passenger side and removing the coils and all the bolts/nuts on the driver side and putting it all back together seemed like less effort than making a guess, being wrong, and then putting it all back together. |

Weasel is a very valuable member here and we're lucky to have his expertise. He's a BMW tech so you can take his advice to the bank. Thanks for being here Weasel!

That's great to hear. I'm obviously pretty new to this community and havent quite sorted out all of the movers and shakers. Its very good to know that this is a group of people who really know each other.
So I'll be back under the hood tackling that V/C gasket one more time. But first coffee! |
