Nooow my radio stopped working! Help!?
I shipped it to NJ where I found this guy on eBay that repaired it for $180 + $30 shipping. Just when things were going smooth, I realized that the orange light that comes on with the radio is turned off and will not respond to the button being pushed to turn it back on. All the buttons on the left side of the MK4 do no work either but the Nav works (without sound) and the On board computer also works. Looks like all sound has been turned off. I searched the forums and online but there doesn't seem to be anyone that may have the fix. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking it's the board in the head unit. Probably has a dry joint or something has gone bad. I'm trying to avoid sending it from CA to NJ again. I'd appreciate any input you guys may have!

When you push the menu button you should see an item in there called "DSP". Can you see that ? Is it greyed out ?
There is a known issue where a connection on the DSP amp comes loose and it causes the radio to go silent even though everything on the display looks ok. I don't know if this can also affect the nav but it's something you could check.

thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my car does not have DSP and there is no mention of it in the menu.
I also noticed that when you hold down the phone talk button on the steering wheel, there is usually a beep or say a command that follows. Now there is nothing. It's as if all sound in the car has stopped working. Do you thinking taking off the battery and putting it back after a few minutes might reset anything or will that just cause more problems? I tried pulling the radio fuse but that did nothing and it only supplies power to head unit, so it the fault is elsewhere, maybe a battery disconnect might do the trick? any thoughts?

If it were me I would disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and see what happens. I wouldn't have thought it would do any harm, then again these BMW's have a mind of their own.
Check all your fuses, though I think you may have already done that. Any other symptoms ? Even in things seemingly nothing to do with the radio ? Check all connections in the trunk area are firmly connected. After that, I'd be looking at the head unit. Is there even power getting to it ? The absence of the orange light suggests not.

Are there any signs of water ingress in the battery compartment or left rear of the back?

Nope, but I did a battery reset and it fixed it.

For all intents and purposes a battery reset on a BMW is like control/alt/delete on windows lol.

Wanna hear the best part? Awhile back my secondary air pump and valve threw codes. I replaced both and cleared the codes, but it kept coming back. After the battery reset, it hasn't come back. I think the fault set so many times that the computer turned the light on regardless.

heres my radio problem.i have an 02 X5, no nav, no dsp.when i first got the car, first 4 buttons didn't work.after time the radio would stop working on rainy days.if i was lucky it would turn on then turn off afterwards by itself.finally it wen't downhill completly and won't work all together.my primary thought is the MID needs to be switched out.i did check the fuse in the glove box and its okay.wiring harness seems fine however i didn't test it with a multimeter.on occasion, when i rip the radio out 2 lights by the telephone button would light up for a split second.thats it.i think the business CD is fine considering i can still get cd's in and out of it(kinda pointless now).any idea what the problem is?
