Water pump experience 2001 4.4i M62

I have exactly the same mess going on right now. To remove the fan you can use a 300mm crescent spanner and a very big flat bladed screw driver. Wedge the driver in from the left under one of the 4 bolts ( that hold the pulley on) and against the big nut itself, and undo clockwise (its a LH thread bolt). Its held on by 60 ft lbs and not too hard to remove.

I would ONLY recommend this method to those DIYers who are GOOD with hand tools! Several failed attempts of this method will deform the bolt heads and therefore render the special tool for fan removal USELESS in its designed task. Proceed with extreme caution DIYers! The only thing worse than not having the right tool for the job is damaging the fastener to the point where the right tool will not work!

Actually, my father (old school shade tree mech) suggested using a used drive belt, rubber hose, or one of those flexible pipe wrenches. Wrap it around the WP pulley to hold it while loosening the clutch. Brilliant and completed safe on the parts. I'm replacing the pulley anyway so I'm not concerned with a few nicks and dings. I'm more worried about damaging the clutch fastener.

Harbor Freight Tools has a great deal on two strap wrenches for $4. Much cheaper than buying the "special" tool.
