Summer 235/65/17
The time has finally come to replace the all season Michelin MXV4's on the X5 to dedicated summer tires now that we have another set of style 57's for winter rims. The only thing is that it is hard to find summer truck tires for 17" rims in a 235/65/17 size.
I've wanted to get General Grabber UHP's which would be $149 installed at the local tire shop; however, they have been discontinued and I have been warned that getting a unrepairable flat would lead me to replace all four tires. The local tire shop also doesn't have any other available choices for summer tires.
I'm left to Tire Rack and then asking the local shop to install the tires (at $15 per tire) or getting another shop to get Vredesteins put on. I'm looking at Continental CrossContact UHP's for $172 on Tire Rack (+ shipping and $15 installation) or Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta SUV tires for $209 installed at the local tire shop. I'm feeling that the Vredesteins would be cheaper overall.
However, I've seen praise for Vredesteins on 19" and 20" rims but never seen any for the 17" size. What would you guys choose in this case? Summer is almost over so would it be better to wait it out over the winter?
