Summer 235/65/17

The time has finally come to replace the all season Michelin MXV4's on the X5 to dedicated summer tires now that we have another set of style 57's for winter rims. The only thing is that it is hard to find summer truck tires for 17" rims in a 235/65/17 size.

I've wanted to get General Grabber UHP's which would be $149 installed at the local tire shop; however, they have been discontinued and I have been warned that getting a unrepairable flat would lead me to replace all four tires. The local tire shop also doesn't have any other available choices for summer tires.

I'm left to Tire Rack and then asking the local shop to install the tires (at $15 per tire) or getting another shop to get Vredesteins put on. I'm looking at Continental CrossContact UHP's for $172 on Tire Rack (+ shipping and $15 installation) or Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta SUV tires for $209 installed at the local tire shop. I'm feeling that the Vredesteins would be cheaper overall.

However, I've seen praise for Vredesteins on 19" and 20" rims but never seen any for the 17" size. What would you guys choose in this case? Summer is almost over so would it be better to wait it out over the winter?

Dunlop sp sport and bridgestone turanza er30 would both be good choices if available from tire rack. Both are super quiet high performing summer tires.

I'd use the Michelin MXV4 all seasons as summer tires, and a dedicated winter tire from October onwards. They may be rated all season, but they gave me excellent performance on the 17" wheels. Think of them as a rain tire.

I looked at the Bridgestone ER30's and the 140 treadwear rating had me running far away form them. The price for the Dunlops are too expensive at $205 each as I would need to pay for shipping and installation after. New Michelin MXV4's are also too expensive at $250+ a pop. The current ones we have on still have around 10k miles left in them but are already older than 6 years so we're thinking of them as a hazard. We paid so little for the rims and tires that it isn't that big of a hit since we already put 2000 miles on them so far. There aren't many selections for summer tires at my size.

Do you guys think I should get the Continentals or the Vredesteins? Rough estimates put their installed prices around $850 (more than I'd like to pay already!).

When is the last 'time' you had an unrepairable flat?
Me neither...if you are budget driven, which you seem to be, why not get those discontinued Generals?

Also, if you have enough tread to get through until 'winter', why not put your dedicated snow tires on this December, and cop the summer tire set next March/April?

If it were mine, I would cop a set of 19" wheels and summer tars next spring, but you must have gotten used to the 17s.

I agree that unrepairable flats are rare -- my family has only gotten 1 on the X5 and that was 30k+ miles ago. Those Generals are really calling my name but knowing my luck, I may get a unrepairable flat on those tires.

We do have enough tread but it is a safety issue on these tires. We somehow got MXV4's with 60% tread left that were made in '01! It was stupid that we didn't check the manufacture date but the price was still too good to pass up. We got OEM Style 57's and MXV4's for less than the price of 4 $100 tires.

I'm starting to open up my search to "high performance" all seasons as summer only tires are hard to come by. I may just try and wait out another month (and put another 1000 miles on these 10 year old MXV4's) and just get dedicated snows first.

I have the Continental ContiCrossContact UHP currently on my X3 (18" size) and have been very satisfied with them. Good feel and predictable to handle at the limit, plus short braking distances. However, they don't absorb bumps well so if you drive in an area with bad roads (i.e your state DOT has failed its citizens) then shop elsewhere. Generally I don't think roads in the Northeast are good so I'd consider something else.

Those are valid concerns. My X5 eats through the Bridgestone's at a fairly good pace, but I'm finding that the Dunlops on the X3 are better in that regard. I choose summer tires primary on low noise, supple ride, and small differences in revs per mile front vs. rear on a staggered setup; these particular tires are winners in that regard. Plus I am a sucker for OE spec tires I guess.

Continentals are on closeout on Tire Rack at a decent price but I just found out my local ETD Discount Tire is selling them for $260 each. It would be very bad to have to replace a UHP if Tire Rack doesn't restock them.

I think I'm going to hold out on tires and just buy dedicated winters when they start to go on sale. School is starting soon and all my college visit trips will go down to a minimum.

That probably means you'll be driving even more.

No seriously, I piled on the miles on weekends since I started college. I'm on track to put on over 36000km (21000 miles) this year in Grad school since starting in May. Granted, distances aren't as vast and spreadout in the Northeast but still, you'll be doing a lot of road trips
