Just Picked up a 2005 4.4l fully loaded X5! Need advice.

Alright so i just picked up my 2005 X5 and so far i love it. I picked it up a week and a half ago at 78,000 miles and im already at 80,000. The carfax report states that the BMW dealership it was at prior to going to auction performed the oil change at 77,500 miles however I do not want to rely on that information. I am planning on keeping this vehicle for roughly another 100k miles.

My question is what would you guys immediately do as far as preventative maintenance to help assure this thing keeps running strong? I was thinking Oil Change, Gear Oil change in both Difs, Water pump replacement, coolant flush. What else would you guys do.

Thanks, Nick

That list is a good start. Also inspect all the coolant hoses, replace any that are soft. Expansion tank. Thermostat. All vacuum and breather hoses.

Power steering flush with new reservoir and clamps, fuel injection clean, battery inspection, check your front outer cv boots, new fuel filter, drive belts pulleys and tensioner, check your AC it might need re-gassing. Somebody posted this elsewhere, but google old school BMW maintenance its a pdf download.

Nick

Congrats on the new x5. I have a 4.4i 2006 sport and enjoy it very much.
I spent today cleaning mine from a trip to montana and back. Ran like a top.
Oh what a highway machine.

I think you are on the right track with the general maint. The forum is a great tool for helping with your maint issues or problem areas of the x5, The x5 is a high performance machine and requires some tlc to keep it running right.

Don't Forget about battery swaps. Its one of the things no one looks at first until there stranded in the middle of no where. Battery is no doubt already 5 years old and its about to die. So might as well swap the bat save your self from being stranded, and Random electrical errors. On the DIY list theres a list of batteries you can get and there no more than 100bux and easily changed by your self. =]

Transfer Case fluid needs changing. It gets dirtier than the diffs and ideally should be done for xDrive vehicles in conjunction with Inspection II @ 100.000km or 60.000mi.

This happened to mine. Battery goes bad or voltage gets out of spec either high or low and the computers go crazy. Abs light comes on, dsc lights come on, transmission failsafe comes on, even low tire indicator comes on.

Since you are in orange county autozone has an agm (absorbed glass matt) maintenance free battery that fits the x5. This is the same as the oem from bmw. This is of course if you need it.

Alternator can go out causing either high voltage or low voltage, check this also.
