I think my X is down for the count...:(
My X has been at my indy (with over 30 years of German experience) for the past few months. He called me last week and told me to have it towed to a dealer. It does start but is limited to just a few miles an hour. He's tried 3 different gas pedals and they all throw the sames codes and put the truck into engine failsafe.
Of course, I'm frustrated and fear what a trip to the dealer will cost me. It's also over 150 miles one way to where it needs to go. At this point, I think I might just have it towed back home to sit. I just hate having to make payments, pay insurance, and plates on a truck I can't drive. I know that there's not much chance that anyone can help solve the problem, but it's good to vent sometimes. |

Sorry to hear that. There is nothing more frustrating than not knowing what is wrong, it will literally keep you awake at night. I hope you get it sorted out soon!

can you not get it towed to a BMW dealer and ask them to do a report and quote only
then when you actually know what you are up against make an informed decision at the moment you are responding (understandably) without having all the facts all that will cost is the tow and the assessment i could think that would be ok |

try a different shop?
its gota be simple ,what codes are returning dont take it to the dealer You will regret it !!!!!! 30 years and sending a car out that cant be fixed ,everything can be fixed just finding the right person to do it is the trick.

I'm lucky to have any German mech that close. I live in rural Illinois so anyone else I go to will surely be far away.
I will call him later today to see if there is anymore info he can give me. In the meantime, refer to this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...hop-month.html |

Might want to consider a subscription to a service like AAA. You could just get that and make sure its the highest level membership (there are 3 levels). I think its like $150 and has many benefits.
One of the benefits is you get a free tow up to 200 miles (I think once per year). Unlimited towing up to 100 miles free, otherwise you pay per mile for each mile over 100 miles. Then you could get at least those additional benefits if you were going to pay for the tow anyways. Have the dealer diagnose and see where you stand from there. If you trust that shop with 30 years experience I would go try the dealer route. Might save you time/money finding the root of the problem(s). Good luck. BTW ... killcrap on your other thread had a suggestion. Might want to try it. If you didn't already know, he's a BMW mechanic that has a lot of experience. |

He wanted to try a brain and both AutoLogic and BMW said that a 2001 was too new to be reprogrammed. A new brain was around $1300.
He did take it out today and said he got it up to 80MPH, but there were also times were it just wouldn't go at all. I'm going to drive it home through the country tomorrow. He did check the connectors for water damage. Seems like it should be such an easy fix... ![]() Any more tips for me to use for when I get the thing back home? |

Drive it to the dealer. Let them diagnose. Pay for the diagnosis.

Well...I made it home with no real issues. Got it up to 100 without a problem. The engine failsafe message is still on. Also, the truck takes off very slow no matter how much it's pressed down. It will get up to normal driving speed though.
I took the cover off of the ECU and unplugged all the connections to look for corrosion. Everything looked brand new under there. I think I have enough confidence to drive it to the dealer now. I know it has to be something so simple... ![]() Thanks for all the help you have given and continue to give! |
