There are literally pages of full threads on the CCV issue; hit Search Tab, upper right of any page, plug in topic, do some reading.

I did so much reading. At least I found in all the threads that my 06 4.8is is not as prone to this failure. Looked through all the service records, doesn't seem like it happened before. Good.

Yes that's fine. However, I believe what mD is talking about is to learn about what actually causes the failures.

If you know that now, and apply what you know, then you're good to go.

Yea I got that too. Been reading, searching and all that great stuff for the past week. I am not sure I even got much work done because of this. Trying to get my knowledge on this car up as much as possible to look for things before they happen. Thanks.

After reading all the Oil Separator failure threads over many years, the only advice I can glean from them in order to "prevent" this from happening to me is:

1. have the newer parts installed (not feeling this one...yet)
2. avoid short trips that don't burn off all the moisture in the oil
3. change oil prior to winter
4. clean out separator from time to time

Do I have that right...did I miss something?

I think you are on point Phil. At lest that is what I gathered before realizing I have the newer parts.

Only thing I can add is to check the hoses from the separator, especially the ones to the valve cover.

Did anybody ever confirm when the "newer" parts were installed from the factory. I saw much conflicting info on this. Is my March 2005 build 4.4 in jeopardy?

I don't think so. Some people were saying that if you are at 80k miles or past, and if it hasn't happened yet, it is unlikely that it will. So it it hasn't happened to you after 7 years, I doubt that it will.

I think I am going to tackle this myself. The tools are not ultra special, any of the ones I dont have, I can buy them for a decent price.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I should replace, or what else to look for while I am in that area replacing the CCV? i.e. some regular maintenance items, or other common part failure signs?

Here is what I am planning to get:

11 61 7 533 400 - Oil Separator Valve
11 15 7 532 628 - Vent Hose
11 61 7 533 398 - Vent Pipe
11 61 7 533 399 - Connecting Line
11 61 7 504 536 - Return Pipe
11 74 7 797 175 - Vacuum Hose

11 12 0 030 496 - valve cover gasket set

- Replace Oil and Filter

- Any thing else?
