I have the whole thing assembled and no play. It is now back on the car and I need to tighten everything up and put the brake back on. Pictures follow later today.
I think that you are right!!. I didn't support the inner bearing race when I pressed the hub in. I just go a new bearing and will be doing this right now. I didn't want to try this until I find out what is going on, but I believe that this is my problem. Thank you much. I will let you know if this is it .

It is really tricky to balance the hub carrier when pressing the bearing back in. There is no flat surface on the back to support it.

I put a new ball joint and CV boot. The new C-clip was a bit tough to tease back in to the CV-joint but in the end it popped in. The left side is back together now.

Next I swapped the rear airsprings and shock dampers. Then disassembled the right front and tomorrow evening I'll put in the new gear I hope on the right hub carrier.

BTW, the threaded sleeves come from Home Depot's electrical dept. You can also see how I cut the outer bearing race and how the bushing can be reomoved from the steel sleeve.

TriX5,

I finally finished the wheel bearing job and everything came out perfect. You were right about pressing the bearing in the inside. Thanks for the help.

Got mine done this afternoon as well and I am very happy. The grinding noise is gone! So, doing the bearings was totally worth the effort. Also gone is the fore/aft wobble on stopping thanks to the new bushings/ball joints.

On to the famous drain and fill of the transmission....
