Mustard Colored 'Goop' Around Oil Cap?

So our X5 just turned 100K miles, and it was due for an oil change. It was cold, so I took it to the dealer, purchased a BMW filter there, and took 8 quarts of Mobil 0w40 (Been using this for 50K miles or so).

I ask for the oil containers back, because they are always in a hurry and leave a bit behind, so I went to add the half of quart from the empty bottles back in a few days later, and found this nasty mustard colored 'goop' all around the oil cap opening, and covering the bottom of the oil cap.

Anyone ever seen anything like this, or is in indicative of something with the BMW straight six?

Hopefully it's not a cracked cylinder head. That's the color my oil was when I had problem on my 325is

It may have been caused by condensation but equally could be cylinder head too. Any overheating issues? Increased oil or water consumption? Get a sniff test done ASAP and you'll know sooner rather than later

Look like a sign of failed CVV (Oil separator)

Condensation, and possibly a sympton of CCV situ...common, and pages of Threads on this issue, via Search Tab.
Here are some very informative threads. Surprised the OP is surprised, and hadn't read of the possible symptoms and situ.

Yellow 'goo'...see post #9 and on, in this thread:

Could be condensation. Alternatively it could be coolant leaking in. I had this on a Touareg I had. Took it to a garage and they Did a test and ruled out leaking coolant. It was quick test. I know BMW ain't vw - but it was my water pump that was the cause of the prob.

Looks very much like condensation. I wouldn't worry about a cracked head, or coolant leak, unless I was also low on coolant at the same time. That amount of condensate/emulsified paste is very typical.

It is not a symptom of a problem with the CCV, the CCV could be just fine. It is a symtom of a problem with short trips, which can also cause problems with the CCV. Cause vs effect.

MD provided the link to a thread above where this is discussed in more detail. Thanks MD, saved me searching or retyping.

Does your X come up to operating temps? Could be something as simple as a bad themostat.
