Oil separator, 2004 cold climate version

Hello everyone,

I have a 2001 X5 3.0i and I need to replace the oil separator and all related hoses. I have a quick question and I would appreciate if someone can shed light on it.

The question is that can I use the 2004 updated (cold climate) version parts (parts#: 11617533400), instead of using the original one for 2001 (parts#: 11617501566)?

I assume that I would have to use the cold climate version's hoses if the cold climate version's oil separator is used.

I searched around the forum; people saying the cold climate version fix some problem. But I am NOT sure if it fits the 2001 model. I don't seem to see anybody confirmed this been done, or doable.

I also called dealer parts people who couldn't confirm either. He said I had to drive in and talk to a technician.

I would appreciate any comments or advice.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I contacted Tisher BMW (getBMWparts.com) in Silver Spring MD and they confirmed the 2004 cold climate version pcv parts can be used on 2001 X5 3.0i (M54). They have a kit (PKE46M54CCVVKIT) on sales now for $145. The kit includes all 6 items needed.

I don't think the cold climate version fixes the problem, it just reduces the likelihood of condensate trapped in the separator of freezing.

That's probably true. But the updated cold climate version is definitely preferred since it only helps.

I also double checked the Bentley manual (2010 Oct version); it also recommend go with the updated cold climate version.

Hope this confirmation/clarification helps address the confusion.

No confusion. No trouble using the updated parts, and if you want to then you definitely should. It is just that the real problem is short trips. They cause condensate to build up. It emulsifies. It collects in the CCV. The updated parts do nothing to impact any of the above

But if all the above happens then the updated parts can reduce the chance of the condensate freezing.

Some have had the updated parts installed and still had problems. Have you had ongoing freezing problems?

Just want to make an update. I order the cold verison kit from Tisher BMW and finally had time to give it a try for my 2001 X5 3.0i. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to get the valve/separator installed. The insulation rubber wrap around the valve/separator taking a lot room. It sits in its position back to back and there is no room for the valve wiggling around in order to be connected with the connecting hose (part 11617533399). I struggled for an hour or so and finally gave up. I removed the insulation wrap and got enugh room to connet the hose (11617533399) with the valve. I don't know if 2004 (or later) model has more room to allow the cold climent version to be installed easier. I believe it would be a miracle if someone get it installed, properly and correctly, for 2002 through 2003 3.0i X5.
