Trans fault code 17 solenoid 2 open circuit

Anyone seen this one? I cant seem to find out which solenoid this one is. Maybe its the wiring inside thats the issue? It happened 35 times and is not currently present. If i start it and try drive off it seems to stay in 4th. If i let it run for a while then shut it off and then restart its fine. Anyone have/had the same?

Is this for a ZF 5HP24, a GM 5L40-E or a ZF 6HP26?

Hmmm. It could mean either pressure regulator solenoid 2 or shift solenoid 2 – probably best to check them both. If you disconnect the multiplug at the back of the transmission you’ll see a 16-pin connector :

Measure the resistance across pins 9 & 16 (shift solenoid 2) and you should get a reading close to 26 Ohms :

Between pins 3 & 12 (pressure regulator solenoid 2) it should be close to 6 Ohms :

Is the TRANS FAILSAFE PROG message appearing?

Pins 9,16 had open circuit when cold. 33.5 ohm hot.
3 and 12 were 5.8 ohm. Is sv2 part of valve body?

It’s this one :

You can replace it without removing the valve block assembly. BMW part no. is 24347506995

Might be worth checking the wiring loom continuity first, though, before spending money on a new shift solenoid?

I quoted out the part. Retail it's $128. The wiring is around $300. I'm going to order the valve so I just have to drop the pan once. If its the wiring I'll repair it. But I'm thinking it's the valve.
Really appreciate the help. This has easily been the best response I've ever had on a forum.
Now what if I had a gear monitoring fault? I had that in another x5. I've basically did a dump and fill and it's been fine since but I recall that fault being the death fault and a rebuild is inevitable. True?
