New to me '02 X5

Hi All-

I am looking at purchasing an '02 X5 4.4 with 138k on it for $10,500. I have had a ppi done and it came back needing valve cover gaskets and has a small coolant leak from the rear of the engine. From what I have read, it might be the valley pan gasket that is leaking. Typically, how much $ should this repair run?
I'm not afraid of diy repairs (I also own an '02 Discovery), but is there anything major I should be aware of with this year of X5? Autocheck is clean and the interior/exterior are near perfect.

Thanks for any help!

I know it's a vague question, but I would really appreciate any advice.

I'm not new to BMW (used to own an 06 E46 M3), just want to know of any issues inherent to the early X5's. I have put thousands into my Disco to make it a daily, and I'm not sure my marriage will tolerate another "project".

Unless you can get the full service history on it, you would be taking a huge risk buying that car. And it is a bit pricey.....

In the last 10k miles I have done enough work on my '03 (now at 100k miles) that it would have cost far more than $10,000 to fix, including removing and disassembling the gear box and at that time I also renewed the leaking v-pan gasket. That was about 5k miles ago. It is running like a charm but I still need to change the valve cover gaskets and I think I need to replace the chain guides and maybe the chain.

So, if you have the FSH and a lot of this has been done the car would be worth buying. If you don't know the history, the car might wind up costing you the same amount again in maintenance.

Thank you for the replies. I was a bit concerned about the price, hence the reason for starting this post. I bought my Discovery thinking it was a great truck, only to spend lots of money to make it that way. It seems there are a few in that price range, so I may continue looking.

Agree with above posters...a lot of miles, not really a give away, and it may be a real PIA, and in the wallet.
Why not hunt for a 3.0, with less miles, or the V8 with even less miles/ existing problems...
