Name that noise...

Okay. So I have been trying to figure this out for a week or two now. I have done several searches here but have not found anything. I guess I might not know what I am searching for exactly. Thanks in advance for any insight.
I have an 06 4.4 and have had it for about a month now. Recently I have noticed a noise that appears only when turning right, only noticeable above about 10 mph and only at temperatures below 45 deg F. The noise is kind of a whirl/whine/screech noise. Most closely resembling a bad heater blower. Could it possibly be related to the directional headlights? I'm at a loss.
Thanks

Can you take a little vid. Turning is related to the CV joint.

Do you have grease in you wheel well?

Turn the wheel and get in there to check the cv boot for rips and leaking/missing grease.

Do this on both sides.

Let us know.

+1 on above

Also, you might want to try applying the brakes lightly when you're turning right and see if it goes away - your caliper could be a little sticky in the cooler temps.

Thanks for the tips I'll check them out tonight. I did take a quick video - if only I can figure out how to attach it.

well it works, but I can't seem to make out any noise. The vid is all twitchy.

My 2c........

Doesn't sound like a driveshaft issue to me, it's too high pitched.... Is it coming from inside the engine bay or from in the cabin?

My money would be on a bearing of some sort and the only things I can think of are.....

Engine Bay
1. Power steering pump
2. One of the accessory belts
3. Radiator Fan rubbing

And my only suggestion for in the cabin would be the dreaded blower motor

You can rule out the directional lights by turning them off and seeing if it still makes the noise

Good luck

Sorry for the "twitchy" vid. I'm sure "filming while driving" is much safer than texting while driving but the quality is not top notch.

I checked the cv boots and they look ok no oil or grease splatter. No difference in sound when brakes applied either.

I didn't think it was belts or blowers because it only happens while moving and turning to the right. The sound is fairly quite and seems like it might be coming from inside. I rolled down the windows and it doesn't seem any louder but I can't think I anything inside that would be steering related.
Thanks again.

It's hard to tell but it sounds a little like the power steering pump starved for fluid but it should make the sound in right and left turns if that was the case I believe. Have you checked the power steering fluid level? If that's not it, try turning everything off...radio, AC blower, headlights, etc., to see if they are somehow related. Also, you might want to try moving the steering wheel tilt to different positions to see if that makes a difference.

Wow thanks for stating the obvious. No really, I had convinced myself that it couldn't be the blower because it only happened when turning right etc. but I had not actually performed the simple test of turning it off.
Turns out I can't reproduce the noise with the heat off, but if I turbot back on and take a right turn- there it is. My new theory is that whatever has the fan (assuming there is only one fan) in place is starting to where and on right turns the fan shifts slightly and rubs against something. On left turns there is no shift or nothing to rub against.
Now I'll have to do some searches to see what I can find on the blower fan.
Thanks for the input another set of "eyes" on a problem is always great.
Love this forum..

Check Power Steering fluid level. i had a strange noise while turning right as well, it turned out a low fluid level (due to a leaky pressure hose)
