They tell me that all the maintenance designed for the BMW is to make the car last 100k miles. That is it. After that, they don't give a s**t about your happiness, and will be more than glad to rape you in all the parts that you need to buy.

How the hell is all this oil supposed to last that long in a performance machine? Especially when BMW suggests you drive it as soon as you start it, and don't warm it up? ......
OK, I promise to stay out of the transmission fluid life issue. For those that believe it is worn out at the same mileage as an early Torqueflight, nothing I can say will change their mind.

But as a former very trusted independent, working at a shop that many enthusiasts came to because we were independent, I don't agree with you putting all fluids in the same category.

I haven't seen any detrimental effects from following the BMW recommendations on engine oil change intervals. I can run 24,000 km just fine, depending on the duty cycle, ie highway vs stop/start. No trouble with turbos or oil consumption.

I changed the fluids in my daughter's new Toyota at 5000 km, because that was appropriate for that vehicle. She also needed a tune-up every two years (plugs, filters). We can't lump all vehicles in together.

And given what we know about extended warm-up cycles, I have been advising people to avoid warm up at idle for at least 30 years now. Ford drove some of that, BMW is no different than any other brand. Wear is related to the duration of the warm up cycle, and idling just extends the warm up period. Drive it moderately, don't beat on it, but drive it.

I agree with many of your points on the need to plan for maintenance and repairs on any BMW that isn't under warranty. I just think it is helpful to separate wear-out from random failures, and realize that more frequent fluid changes don't do anything for things that break randomly due to causes other than wear. You only improve reliabilty with increased maintenance if the breakdowns are caused by wear or lubrication break-down, and not other causes often related to design or use issues.

By the way, if anyone currently has a 4.8is, located in CA, has taken care of their beauty and has thought about moving it, please let me know.

I am only looking for Black Interior.

Thanks!

...If I was perusing car boards, and read here for awhile, as a neophyte, I would run to the non-BMW dlr,

And, as I posted, if my annual tab for 'repairs' on one car was $6Gs, I would buy a used near pro stock, mod it for the street, and have some serious rolling around fun.
