Oddly enough my dealer said this is fairly rare overall. You wouldnt think so when reading this forum.

Haven't gotten mine back yet from the indy, so not sure how she's looking. In speaking with him he said that it is usually due to the mechatronics. As you are stopping the computer tells the torque converter to disengage (in the name of fuel economy while stopped). The problem arises when you are coming to a stop, but then start accelerating (light changed as approaching maybe). If it is already in the process of taking the load off but suddenly needs to put the load back on there is potential for bad things to happen.
This is of course in layman's terms and how I understood what he told me two days ago. Scott |

Other than that, leave it alone. It was not designed to be maintained regularly, it was designed to run to failure. While many have tried to do unscheduled preventative maintenance in order to have a better chance at a longer transmission life, there is no data that suggests that approach works.

I have to disagree with the notion of not changing tranny fluid. I used to tow my boat with the X5 and the number one cause of tranny failure is high temps, you should have seen how bad my tranny fluid was when we changed it. I did this three times in the last two years the car has 147k miles on it and I have had no transmission issues at all, despite towing.
