+1 Over the years all of my vehicles with automatics got their fluid changed every 30k. I never had an automatic trans failure in 30 years.
This is my first BMW with an automatic though... trans fluid change is on the schedule before the next major road trip.

Hey Hobbes, I was wonder if you've gotten this issue resolved for your X? And if so, what was the final diagnosis?

I'm experiencing very similar issues when slowing to a stop at low speed, the transmission would sometimes have that bump/jerking shake/lunging feeling. And when I have to transition from a slowing stop to accelerating, sometimes it would give a hard bump/jerking as I'm accelerating out of a turn. Recently, I got a trans fail safe error that went away after a restart (had an indy pull the code, and it showed a gear ratio fault). I'm expecting the worst (transmission rebuild or replacement), but I'm hoping to take it in somewhere for a more thorough test to determine the problem. Hoping it's something less than a full transmission, like a valve body.

I'm going to try to schedule an appointment with European Motor Works this weekend to see if they can look at my X and give it a test drive to see the symptoms.

Haven't had a chance to get the car in to the shop yet. Going to shoot for this weekend or next. Will update thread when I know more. Good luck!

Icer006, I was wondering how much does it cost to replace the valve body?

I'll look through my records from EMW. I'll send you a PM if I find it. I have lots of paperwork to sort through as my truck's buyer is picking it up this Friday.

Guys, I found it...

Transmission Mechatronic unit: $3,075.21
Transmission pan gasket: $32.33
BMW ATF: $317.60

Mine was replaced at 71k miles.

edit: here is a website for parts: http://www.tsgparts.net/index.php?p=...d=44&parent=37

I was hoping it was something in the range of $1500-1000. Is that price with labor included? Is that a brand new valve body unit, or a rebuilt one?

It was a new one; warranty paid for it. The link shows rebuilt ones. Maybe half the cost? I don't know.

Labor not included in those prices. It was under $437.
