Good for you!! The dealer wants $500 to repair my door. I will buy the new (updated) part and do an install myelf. The X5 is going in my garage and the motorcysle can join the lawn mower in the shed.

The doors on our X3 get "sticky" in cold weather. I think maybe some air is getting in, condensating, then freezing a little bit. The lock itself is fine for me, but it just takes an extra yank to open the door. It's parked outside now

Heading north (NJ/CT) in 10 days, I have a feeling I'm going to run into this problem again - I've been avoiding it by spending winters in SC - will try to use the post #28 solution - Happry Holidays to all!

Holy F%#! I experienced this for the first time this morning.
2 feet of snow fell last night and it was about -8c. As I'm digging out the X on the driveway, I shut the door and it didn't catch. I pulled the door shut and hit the lock button on the center console and on my keyfob, then I was trapped and had to use the passenger door to climb in and out. Luckily it thawed out after a day of skiing knee to waist deep powder

Same thing happened to me on my 2004. I was able to use the keyfob and lock and unlock the doors and was finally able to get them to close. I've had a number of annoying issues with cold weather in Chicago.
1) Nav screen froze - Display would not change but I could still change modes between radio, CD and radio cd still worked. The car eventually warmed and the screen unfroze after restarting the car 2) Frozen door latch as above 3) Same thing happened to the rear hatch - Basically had to move the vehicle in the sun and wait for it to warm up before it would catch again. 4) SES light came on after filling up. Read the boards and saw this could be gas cap issue, it wasn't in my case. I ended up taking a long drive to Indianapolis (about 250 miles) drove the car until there was literally 1 mile left on the range on OBC. Filled up again and the light was off the next day. It was also about 15 degrees warmer in Indy which may have had something to do with it. I just think these cars are not good in very cold weather? Any one else agree? I love my vehicle but these little things are annoying. I have a deeded spot but have to park outside in the city, wish I had a garage! |

I had the double whammy also in Chicago last year on my 2001. Pulled the driver's door and nothing happened (cable snapped). Went around to passenger door and it opened but wouldn't close (froze open). Luckily there was a local service garage at the end of the street, as it was a little hard to drive leaning over holding the passenger door closed.
Moved to NW Indiana last year with a garage and the one night I left the vehicle out, the driver's door froze open again. Luckily it thawed over night in the 45 degree garage. It is really interesting that BMW will not address this issue on a vehicle they should pride themselves on in this kind of weather. I know these are assembled in South Carolina, but doesn't it snow in Germany? Hello?!? I agree jlegendre, I love mine also, but cold weather has been an adventure. At least the seat warmers worked to warm my A** while I sat and comtemplated my next move. |

Happens to me all the time...I'm not even surprised by it any more...just hold the door shut and lock it until I crank the heat enough and it defrosts.....The X is a great car but I would never expect such an expensive car to have so many stupid problems...(frozen doors, rattling rear hatch, etc)
