Frozen door locks - Common Problem ?

I used a pair of bungee cords, looped them around the door handle and then attached them to the posts on the head rest. It at least kept them from flying open on turns. A real pain in the tookas. I either have to trade the X-5 or move to Hawaii.

In my experience, turning up the heat will melt the frozen water "locking" up the door within 10 minutes - a little patience is needed, tough to accomplish given the irritation

40 minutes with the heat close to full blast did not solve the problem for me, today it is 20 F outside with lows into single digits.

Mine always does that and in the end, I ended up breaking th driver door handle while opening it in the cold weather. I had to replace the door handle carrier and everything has been great since. Now the passenger door freezes way more often than the driver door.

Idaho, typical single digit temps (day)(and lower) - sorry my solution did not work - I guess the low humidity out in Idaho keeps the water accumulation from building up too high to present me with your level of problem

My driver's door handle has been frozen for the past week. In the morning, I have to pull with all my might to get the handle open. Then, once I do, it stays extended open and the door won't latch when I close it. I have to get out of the X, and push and pull on the handle until I hear it catch.

Last night, I had an idea. I decided to park my X facing the opposite direction so that the morning sun would shine on the driver's door. When I headed out to work this morning, I pulled on the door handle and it opened perfectly! No resistance, no clicking, nothing! My idea worked!! Woooooo hoooooo!!!!

UPDATE! I've been parking this way all week and my door has been opening perfectly! Just as it does during the warm months!

Good luck suing BMW. They are pitbulls when it comes to legal matters. I won $15,000 from my local dealer and BMW North America. My dumb ass lawyer forgot to include BMW Financial in the suit and now they are after me and ruining my credit. Our agreement is that he fix the situation or be sued for malpractice and general stupidity. BMWNA did not have a leg to stand on but they delayed and just generally beat the shit out of my lawyer. And he specializes in this very specific field.

Yup..its snowing and freezing rain right now where I am..This is a problem I'm expecting to happen actually..and its a pain in my ass.. I usually shut my door and lock it (even though it won't latch since its frozen) then I drive off...I'm trusting my door lock a little too much maybe...thats the only thing keeping the door shut when i drive during the times when my door latch freezes...
