tmv, videos coming to your gmail in a few mins.

Thought I heard some "crickets" from the engine, maybe it is my DISA starting to go after all...

I'd say it came from WP bearing or the tensioner pulley. How old are they?
Sound the same as my 525i when the WP bearing is shot.

Need help to identify this sound - Cause found: water pump bearing! - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

It's not a rattle like that, so I think the WP is ok for now. 63k on it (original as far as I can tell), all tensioners, idler pulley, belts and fan clutch was just replaced a couple months ago.

If you listen to the low end sounds on that vid that is what i'm talking about, the low pitch whine that's hard to hear. When I'm driving I hear it too at different rpm ranges, but I also get a slightly metallic rattle from the engine area that gets louder or diminishes with RPMS, which is why I'm thinking maybe DISA valve? It might not be terribly shot, but maybe starting to go and perhaps a small vaccuum leak?

i'm gonna take my DISA out later on and take the air intake boot from the MAF to the manifold off so see if there are any cracks, just looking at it installed I don't see any. I do have a distinct whistle while driving that gets louder with RPMS and goes away when I shift, so I think I definitely have a leak somewhere.

The air intake boot from the MAF is fine, no dry rotting or cracks that I can see, the rubber is actually quite supple still, which i'm guessing it may have been replaced with a better part in the past.

The DISA (or intake air adjuster) valve is tight as can be, no flopping either. I may buy a replacement o-ring to make a better seal. I noticed some carbon buildup inside of my intake manifold but nothing crazy.

I'm pretty much out of options unless I take it to my mechanic and see if he can find some problems, I guess for now I'll have to just enjoy the truck, maybe I need to replace my beat to sh!t tires that are old, bald and starting to crack and find that a lot of noises are going away.

Did you ever figure out what it was? I've got the same thing and it sounds like I have a supercharger. I checked to see if someone pranked me by installing one, but unfortunately they hadn't.
