testing tie rods by hand? and visual inspection

hi all have a 3.0d e53 2004, at 47000miles went for the bi-annual test and the engineer told me that my front bushings need replacing at next service (trust the guy as he is a family friend) can anyone tell me firstly if it is this part number off the realoem site? 31126769715 part 7 in the diagram

secondly since i am doing this is there anyway of telling if the chopsticks needs changing?i remember seeing a good post with pics but i cannot find post, and read that you can visually inspect them for leaks at the rubber boot area, and also if you can shake them by hand whilst the car is on the ground they need replacing???

bushings at 47000 going can it have something to do with totally pot holed filled roads out here?

thanks in advance for any feedback

Good day!!

If you are in there changing bushings, I would do all four (two of #7 and two of #11)...

I just swapped out the chopsticks in my 02... Honestly, if you don't hear a constant rapping on the bottom of the floorboard while going slow over a rough road, leave them alone!! The swap was almost too easy if you have access to a decent air gun!! I think it took me more time to jack up the X5 than it did to swap out the chopsticks!! The only reason you will need the 17mm open end wrench (very thin version) is if you are doing the job by hand...

Good luck!!

Cheers!!

thanks william, nope dont here the noises you mention, so may just go with changing the bushings..out here dealer charges about 50$ per bush, gonna scan around and see what i can find before parting with my money, but back to the question of the chopsticks, to test they are shot would i be able to tell if i can wiggle them by hand?

also looking at leforder bushing as the myle cant find in europe, any idea if they are good>

If you can wiggle the chopsticks by hand, you will hear them inside... If no noise, they are fine...

If I'm not mistaken, Leforder is original equipment supplier for BMW... Someone else know for sure??

Cheers!!

ok thanks roads are real harsh out here so not option for the powerflex bushing as i guess making the ride firmer means all the energy from the rough roads will have an impact elsewhere on the suspension componets, so have to go either will the lemforder or oem bmw ones.....
