I might be missing something but why don't you guys just unlock all doors. In my X, when all doors are unlocked, so is the liftgate, therefore even if it closes back after I shut the driver's door I just put my fingers on the liftgate sensors and It pops up. Just make sure when u get out the the car, u press the unlock door button, u don't even need to press the liftgate button, it will be unlocked as the doors are. U just need to open it then.

I noticed this problem the first week i had my X. Someone in this thread mentioned when the door side closes, sends air pressure in the cabin closing the back door latch. What i do is take the key with me and use it to open the back door. I dont use the inside switch anymore and when I do I make sure i dont close the side door. Thats it problem solved.

Thank you for this thread! I have been irritated multiple times by this same "feature". At least now I understand it is a mechanical issue (due to the air pressure theory), rather than some lock weirdness.

My alleged "liftgate button" above the license plate has never worked. Same crap happens to me when I hit the liftgate button on the dash and then close a door. I even inquired about this a few months ago, not a damn one of you responded either, you friggin' bunch of Little Rascals chasin' Darla! :p

Yes, it works fine if I go straight to the liftgate after unlocking all doors. The problem is when the X has been sitting unlocked for let's say an hour or so, and I go to open the liftgate, but it's locked, so I have to open one of the unlocked doors and press the button to open the liftgate. If I leave that door open, the liftgate will open for me. If I shut that door, the liftgate relocks itself. I'm sure the dealer would explain this as a "feature" when it is really an annoyance. I've gotten used to either keeping the door open until I open the liftgate or taking my keys with me, so I can unlock the door from the key fob.

Same thing had been happening to me until along w/ 'other' X5 'features' ...until I printed off the TSB's (tech service bulletins) and brought the print out and the vehicle to my BMW Dealer and had them fix/replace all the specific items.
*Rear Brake light were out.....
*SRS Indicator light was on.....
*Sunshade Clips are all broken...(okay so my dog did this but it was in the TSB)
*Rear Hatch was not unlocking correctly
*Radio was not receiving reception very well....

Everything was covered under warranty...2002's have until 50k, luckily I took mine in w/ 49,700 and the was zero cost to me and the rental I got was hella-fun a new 530i.

You just have to belong to an awesome forum like X5world and it can save you a lot of time/money. GOOD LUCK!!
