great thread, so I basically realize that the $2800 plug n play solution sold by Bimmernav.com with MK4, widescreen monitor and retrofit harness is probably well priced considering everything you need.

I think the issue was back stock on the previous year BT/BMW Assist modules. Kinda like the 2003 Sport E39's with the E39 M5/MTech bits on them. BMW likes to say that they made the 2003 'special' for it's final year. The reality is that the business decided they had more MTech bits on the shelf than they needed, so they just sold through it by putting in production.

This is much the same reason that early 2004 E53's were face lifted but still had the smaller non-pano roof and non adaptive lights (and lighter and less troublesome- I wish I still had my '04 with the small roof and facelifted non-adaptive lights): Leftover shells and electronics from 2003 E53's.

So last week I went back to the originating dealer to get the complete service history of my 4.8is. From Delivery till 3/12, the vehicle was always serviced at the dealership. I had to jump through hoops to get all 213 pages of the history, but I got em!!!

Seems like the X had some history on it while it was under previous ownership and I'll share a few things.

2156 Mi- Cust. states fuel level always low. Warning indicator on. STORY: Tech went to fill up tank, only took 2.5 gallons of fuel. Replaced sending unit.

2234 Mi- Cust. states fuel level still incorrect. Replace fuel pump, fuel filter.

8567 Mi Cust state rear looks lower than front. Advise client. STORY: L/R and R/R air struts cracked and leaking. Replace both Air Struts.

15689 Mi- Cust. Requests 15K service.

15698 Mi- Cust. states burning smell in cabin. STORY: Oil filler cap loose. Oil spray over entire engine bay. Told client vehicle will be detailed and cleaned of all oil. Replace oil filter element and drain and refill oil.

21760 Mi- Cust. States bad vibration under braking or highway speeds. STORY: Tech noted engine light on. and Brake light on. Diag. revealed Failure code. SIB 11-03-06 Vibration from braking due to front pads worn. 1.3mm. Replace front pads and rotors.

22560 Mi- Cust. states R/R tire leaking air. STORY: Rim cracked from sever curb rash. Tire needs to be replaced due to under-inflation. $1303.00

46708 Mi- Cust. state R/F wheels loosing air pressure. STORY: Rim cracked at bead. Needs to be replaced. Wheel ordered. $1215.28

63882 Mi- Cust. states while driving is feeling a horrible suspension/banging noise coming from left front. Inspect and Report. STORY: Replace Front Tension Strut, Wishbone Strut, Swing Supports. Test drove: OK Perform Inspection II.

63901 Mi- Cust. states same banging noise from front suspension. LF air strut leaking. Goodwill replacement provided by ******** BMW

That is most of the cray stuff that happened to the X. I am just curious as to the Inspection II. The parts list seemed very short and looked like Inspection I was done, but it was noted as Inspection 2. So next step when I have time is to take the valve covers off and pull the plugs and see how those guys look. R&R if they are fouled up.

Jeez, was the previous owner a 16 year old girl who like to run into curbs, at 50 mph? Between the rims/tires and the suspension work, I wonder what was going on? Seems like your X was treated about like mine was. Not cared for and no preventive work, just driven and things fixed, when they got bad. Oh well, your X is in good hands now, it seems.

Yeah, the lady is actually in her forty's. She lives up in Northern Jersey where alot of parallel parking is done. I am assuming she kissed the curb a lot and finally just gave a good shot to the wheel and it cracked. Fortunatly, she did take good care of the vehicle. The vehicle went in for service every 6K or so and always was detailed. It shows because the vehicle was flawless on the inside. She must have been a tiny woman because there wasn't any wear on the seats. But since I have owned it, I need to be more conscious when I get out. I am crushing the side walls of the sport seat. Normally I open the door, turn and slide out. But the side walls are so high, I just drag my ass out, crushing the plastic insert.

So from the records, she requested maintenence work to be done. She also had a set a snow shoes that she had the dealer put on every year. (Albeit the SA probably twisted her arm to get it done) but none the less done.

But I do have some concerns. Looking through the list of things that were done, I question A lot of the work. So since delivery, the X has had 3 filter changes. (Cabin and air), but I pulled the filters the other week and noticed both were dirty. Plus they had a date stamped in 2004???? Unless the dealership carried a lot of NOS, I don't think they ever changed them. Also with Inspection 2, there is a list of things to be done. Looking at the invoice, it looked as if just a oil service was performed. But Inspection 2 is noted as being done, but only at the price of $267.87??? Inspection 2 at the minimum cost $400, normally it is $800. For $270, that's about what an oil service is.

So I don't know. Need to get a parts list in order and start getting to work.

Oh and Slick, if you see this, I got you beat. Expansion tank (According to the invoices, has never been changed! 107k miles) lol I beat you! Ordered a new tank yesterday! lol

Man, I'm right there with you on the side bolster issue, getting out of those sport seats. I've actually considered lowering the truck so that I can reach the ground and stand up out of the seat.

Sadly, I'm not surprised that your questioning the quality of work done via the records. My local dealer here sucks big time, and I wouldn't trust them with either of my vehicles. Pretty rediculous if you ask me. But maybe in your case it was just NOS parts? Wishful thinking at least.

Wishful thinking is NOS, but reality, it was never changed. I have to get under the X when I have a chance an let some oil out. Last oil service was in june. I just checked the oil yesterday and the oil is hitting the very top of the plastic indicator. Actually hitting the steel wire. SO it is overfilled by 2 quarts. So going to drain it cold so it comes out controlled and hopefully I can get it in the right spot.

my story is weird. the X was bought at bmw boston dealership and the owner lived in maine. so all the service was done at Topar dodge dealership upto 88k now the speedo is at 93k cluster dot and i found autocheck saying the mileage is 300k but the motor is mint. you cant tell it has that many miles. more like it looks like it is at 60k no cracks or wear on any hoses or steering parts.
