Did just purhase the cheapest X5 ever?

So I just picked up a 2002 X5 for $2000.

It's 4.4 v8, black + tan, nav, bunch of other options.

Here she is in my first family portrait:

Problems / Projects:
- needs hood
- needs front bumper fixed
- drivers door handle doesn't really work
- one rear door handle doesn't work from outside
- sunroof leak
- one rear window doesn't work
- drivers window doesn't travel in it's track correctly
- 19 wheels need refinishing / replacing
- most of the climate buttons are a mess and need fixing but will work with effort
- self leveling rear suspension was converted to manual, would like to fix
- steering wheel movement non-functioning
- keyless entry doesn't work
- rear seat recline buttons in the roof don't work (buttons at tailgate work)
- a shudder under braking
- clunk when accelerating from a coast
- needs a mas sensor (already ordered)
- needs a ball joint (new one came with it)

wish me luck, I'm sure there is more that I can't remember.

You will think twice about your title when you're done with her

I'd focus on the mechanical end of things first and get to cosmetic repairs later.

Good Luck!!

If you can do most of it yourself you won't come out too badly. The door handles and windows sound like stuff you can do yourself with help found here. There are certain things like the steering wheel adjustment and roof mounted recline buttons that are certainly not necessary fixes if you can live with them. I'd just get all new wheels. Those look like crap and judging by the degraded finish, they are crap. Some nice OEM reps would be relatively inexpensive or you can find some others for sale here. The pic from the rear looks like the driver's side exhaust is pushed in. Is that right?

The body work and whatever is causing the clunk could be expensive though. I think I'd be scouring the junkyards for replacement panels and the HVAC controls.

I think the first fix you should implement is removing the douche bag "Tapout" sticker. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that (a) you didn't put it on and (b) it is already gone.

172k miles on it, but a lot of mechanical work has been done over the year. I know the previous owner a bit and he purchased it at 32k and drives for work basically up and down the new york thruway so this thing is a lot younger than the miles indicate. The transmission and motor are 100%.

since I mad this post I ordered a new mas for $25 shipped from ebay, started digging into the interior cleaning, and removed the tapout sticker.

It's a big project, but lets be honest, I could flip this thing for a profit or part it and get my $2k back super easily.

Over 170k, has a tow package and used for over a decade in a rust-belt state??? You should have passed on this truck for $2k my friend. I picked up an '03 4.4 Spt Pkg one owner, full service history, PPIed, Fla delivered/driven, dealer trade in, 90 day p'train warranty and looks new for under $13k over 2 yrs ago.

You will soon find that this X is a money pit. You have some issues behind that front bumper impact that caused the hood damage too.

I can't imagine how many unqualified "chimps with tools" have done repairs on a 10 yr old vehicle with those miles and in that condition. All that stuff doesn't fail at the same time, this X is in that condition due to the owner having a "don't give a crap" attitude about vehicle repair/maintenance. Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Welcome to the board man. I just responded to your thread on NYspeed about your recline issue. Also if your not looking to keep the hitch, i'd be up for a full on trade out.
