Semi off road e53 x5, 15cm lift(+/-6inch)

Hello

I’m Lucas and new to this forum

Currently happily living the e53 x5 life and enjoying it to the fullest extend!
Been kinda hesitant to posting stuff here but I’ll give it a swing non the less!

Sow in short. Got my x5 about 5 years ago already. Drove it stock.

And to everyone’s amazement it broke. Kinda badly
Front diff blew taking the transfer case with it. But amazingly the front driveshaft survived
Sow yeah I replaced the parts. Hoping to get to drive it some more.
And then it broke
Piston number 4 has had enough of life and decided to exit in a spectacular smoke show.

Sow what do you do then? Well the most logical thing obviously! You spend too much money on a replacement engine and fix it again.
New engine should be easy right? Yeah I was struggling cause of the front axle situation so had someone with a lift help me out.
He stole the car….

I know this is turning into a big shitshow but hold up it gets better!

I stole it back

During the day with the paperwork in hand. Grabbed my car hauler and picked it up when someone found it for me
Happy days. The car is back.

Now just need to replace all the flooded electronics since it was stored in a swimming pool or something.
But no worries that’s what donor cars are for right?
So yet again I fixed it

In order to break this shitshow of a cycle I thought why not just do some mods finally!
Parked the car and someone drove into the car
Not that bad just a broken mirror and some hours spend with police and insurance. It’s all getting fixed(for a change).

Getting to the good part!
I thought about increasing the usability of this awesome platform.
I’ve seen tareks post on the lift kit and such. Really liked some things. Others where not for me but hey that’s why we have our own cars right?! To do whatever the heck we want.

Started looking around to see what’s out there.
Many lift kits are just some aluminium shims and I wasn’t digging that. Also I want some more actual travel in the suspension not just the looks.

Finally settled on some Land Rover parts and guess what! They don’t fit so eventually swapped some different shock bodies around and made it work
Lowered both the front and rear subframe to correct suspension geometry
Changed some arms to fully adjustable ones since the values were all over the place after lifting it to this point.

New brake lines all over the place since most of them run in very strange places and could get caught on something.

Oh before i forget. Compound turbo!

upload image jpg

Since I’m lucky enough to have the m57 engine is just upgraded to the later style compound turbo setup from a new x5
First I want to see how she behaves with 2 and then might add number 3 afterwards
Assembled some 200% injectors to keep the fueling system more relaxed. Added a cp3.3 pump. (Still have to make a brace for it)

New vacuum track since I hate the original system with every fibre of my being.

All a/n lines on the fuel side now. Might throw in some quick connects later for serviceability!

Doing the double electric pump later on as well since it’s a nice back up if one fails

Converted to a 5x5.5 hub setup so I can run some thick steel wheels 17x9 et9
Was a bit more of a hassle then I wanted it to be but now the 315/70/17 general grabbers fit at least!

Upgrading the brakes since my calipers got water in them at one point unfortunately. Guessing being stolen for a year does that to a car….

Looking into doing an 8hp but I’ll let that simmer for a bit. Still have the old engine to do a mock up luckily(well not really but you get my point haha )

Also switching over to a Land Rover transfer case with high/low since I do take her off road from time to time
Rear diff also ordered with a locker so it’s 2 diffs that can lock up
Maybe look into a simple limited slip for the front to have to distribute power a bit better on and off-road.

Everything on the interior is still stock and I’ll probably only end up swapping the seats(mine don’t even have heating )
Always wanted to combine the comfort and sport seats to make a very adjustable sports seat

Upgraded from the factory intercooler to a home made setup. Just to get the iat’s down a bit and get the intercooler up high and safe.

I’ll keep updating during my work breaks
And put some pictures in as well cause just the story isn’t as intriguing right….

Getting closer 75% done roughly!

gratis plaatjes uploaden

Still have to install a shim to support the rear spring purge so it’s a little low still….
But we’ll just fix that again!

Finally received a shipment of powerflex bushings. Was really fed up with torn rubbers (who isn’t right?) so decided to get rid of all of them!

She’s really starting to turn into a dream car of mine like this.

Parts for my new side mirror should come in soon. Any guesses on how much a brand new complete folding mirror assembly costs in 2023 for a 20+ year old car?

Ordered a bunch of aluminium pieces to turn them down and relocate the rear axle. Rear wheels are rubbing too hard and it’s not super safe to cut that much out….
Sow let’s move that rear axle back!

Anyone else replaced these?

Sow I haven’t done a lot since (believe it or not) I was shopping for some armoured cars for friends.
Luckily I did finally receive my k&n air box!

Haven’t decided on the final mounting method but I’ll check that tomorrow
Also have to repin some connections since the cables got damaged unfortunately along the way.
New plugs and pins will fix that.
Also have a new oem pigtail for my second high pressure fuel pump!

Thinking about scanning and printing or blow moulding a pipe inside the fender to not have a massive 2.5 inch pipe running along the fender for the snorkel. It would be easier that way but it looks like butt….

Been dreading doing all these a/n lines and such somehow. But it’s time to bite down on that preverbial wooden spoon and just do it….. otherwise she’ll never start again….

Well I was right it’s close to masochisme doing this an line crap but I’m hanging in there
Found a way to change the fuel tank hats over to a/n bulkhead fittings. Ripping all the blue lines out of this car as we speak. Dropped the tank to do so.
Ordering a ton of fittings and lines. Want to keep the auxiliary heater as well cause it helps in the winter with keeping the engine up to temp as well….

Brake lines are coming along nicely as well. Replacing all of those isn’t fun either but I like brakes. So we’ll just keep pushing on.

Also added some rollover valves to the diff breathers to keep the water out of them just in case.

Finished almost all of the wiring. All new connectors on the engine loom. Replaced the injector harness with a new one.

At least she’s on all fours again permanently and rolling again. Still have to bend over and buy all new 4.8is brakes/calipers/pads/carriers. Since there aren’t any other good 17 inch solutions than this setup. But it’s an improvement plus all the brakes are fresh and new again so no worries for those parts in the foreseeable future.

I thought there was a good chance the Range Rover L322 spring conversion struts would fit….not so? What did you end up doing then, and how? Would love to get some extra stroke up front. Mine spends most of its time on pavement and semi improved and dirt roads, but a properly taller strut would be nice.

Your limited slip solutions are very ambitious and would love to hear more about how you got the Range Rover transfer case to work, and what rear diff you used. The front is definitely a problem since it doesn’t seem anything is or was made to upgrade it.

How are your temps with that turbo, and how are you keeping the oil cool? Seeing your nice radiator and inter cooler work makes me think that while I’ve got some outstanding interior pieces and mods left to do on the interior still, the next significant project I’m considering is bringing my coolant temps down. Lots and lots of opinions on this, all valid to different degrees I suspect, but I’m settling into the camp that 105ish degrees is hot, and beyond that the pressures involved are exponential. I’ve also come to think that MAP cooling is just some bmw way to play their slice. The car runs super hot for emissions reasons, which robs power often when the DME has to control for predetonation, so they make a software workaround that cools it down further when needed, but which reacts too late. I’m eyeing the CSF Race e39 M5 triple pass radiator and an 80 deg thermostat. The E39 radiator would entail modding the tyranny cooler to an air to oil version. My CSF oil cooler mod keeps the engine oil at 90 to 95 degrees based on the t-stat in the filter housing, so another one of these should work fine on the tranny with an in line tstat.

Well it’s simple. We made our own. That’s the solution. Everything else on the lr struts are incompatible with the bmw hubs. Bolts don’t line up. Position is wrong. Mounting flange is too narrow. So that’s why I went this route.
The diffs aren’t rocket science luckily bmw only makes so many types of different differentials.
The lr transferase simply bolts up. I let the x5 control half of it and the locking is done manually with a switch.

My fix for my temp issues is simple. I got the m57. It lets me control a lot with just the fuel. Even the temps.

My radiator is closer to an e46 csl then a e39. I moved my coolers away from the bottom cause I want the car to hit firm metal before it hits a cooler somewhere.

Pretty well. Making custom rocksliders/sills and did a full 3/5 mill plating of the whole bottom of the car.
Biggest issue I ran into was the steering shaft. Found some stuff that should work but the delivery times are obscene!
F10 steering column and a custom order sikky e46 shaft.
Also bought solar for the roof.
Had to build another Daf ya328 in between so haven’t had the time to actually build much.
When new parts come in I’ll finish her up. Engine runs at least. She stops too. Shifting forward and reverse so I’m still happy
