it's not the exact same, the x5 has 355/37x and the cars have 360/360 (hp/torq).

What I have heard is that its the same engine on 650 and 750 as on 4.8 but tuned differently therefore the different HP/torq.

I also heard that its was originally designed by Alpina and is their B10 engine. Alpina handed over the blueprints to BMW for mass production. BMW has tuned it to their needs.

It may just be the exhaust but that same engine in those cars sounds like a pussycat compared to our beast in the x

Performance

Powered by special version of BMW V-8 engine:
4.8 liters, 375 hp, 383 lb-ft. torque
Aluminum block & cylinder heads, specially manufactured by BMW for use in this engine
VANOS variable intake-valve timing
Specific ALPINA elements include pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, valves, intake manifold, engine-management system and software
ALPINA hand-polishes intake and exhaust ports for enhanced breathing ability

this is the base of the 4.8 used in the X5, this is the power plant from the Z8 Alpina i think BMW used this when building the new units but not 100% sure i know that the 4.8 in the X5 is different from the 5/6/7 but dont ask me how just what i was told this maybe BS

As far as i know the engines are identical. Only the software tuning is different. The 650, 750 and550 have more topend hp. and the X5 4.8is motor is tuned for more low to midrange tq and hp because of vehichle weight 5000lbs, and the fact you can tow with the X5 and it needs bottom end power. Same thing with the x5 4.4 and 545 645 and 745.
