Off topic, but decades ago, I would get more speeding tickets using passports/valentines/bells radar detectors, then now that I do not use one. I've not had a speeding ticket in over 15 years. And I do not travel at posted limits. I always go 15-30 miles over posted limit, both highway and major street roads. I do not speed on small streets.

Several times, I've gone past a speed trap doing 80 on a 65 limit, and cops don't follow. Of course, I hit the brakes after I pass them, so to let them know, I'm slowing down.

I don't know if cops hate radar users more than regular speeders. Maybe, a past or present police officer can chime in.

Regards,

Doubtful, you are older now, big changes in driving ability and intelligence presumably.

Older and hopefully wiser.

I remember one trip I took with an uncle. He was in his 60s. It's supposed to be about 1 hour 20 minutes doing regular posted limits. My uncle would never go past 45 MPH. Ha!

And then, would turn to me, and say he never gets speeding tickets!

I have totally different advice. The only time that I've had a ticket in the last 18 years is when I was driving a rental car in FL without my V1.

My (hard-wired) V1 has saved me so many times that I gave up counting a long time ago. On highways, I typically drive about 30-40 mph over the limit so a V1 is essential.

Regards,
heres my story, im young but been through some hard and painful driving experince in the past.
I put the radar in because i got a good deal on it and just to be alert on the road.
i do not realie on the radar. i dont speed often only go 10-15 over tops.

but its good to have a radar. doing 40 in a 30 long strech and than you hear a loud noise, look up and k band with lines... thinkin wth is it goin off, going further down the road.. about .4 miles down you see a speed trap where a cop already pulled someone over... and you think wow good thing i slowed down after i listened to radar.

you still can get a speeding ticket for going too slow - not too many folks realize that, but most US highways are posted not less than 40 not more than 65... so, in theory, unless you are limping home on a broken ride, a cop can give you a ticket for going too slow... a lot of folks here probably could chime in about slow cars impeding the flow of traffic...

I've used the V1 both domestically and overseas, even though overseas it was not as imperative for me - the cops would pull me over, give me a lecture about dangers of going 40 in 20 zone, or going 80 in 40 zone... tell me about their poor childhood... 3 kids that they have to raise on a small salary of a cop... 2 girlfriends... and then they would let me go... but the detector would go off as designed...

i actually have two V1 with remote displays and remote power modules, both of them were mounted in my bimmers, first in E34 and E39, and then the E39 and E53... It is like an AmEx - never leave home without one...

As an electronics technician with background in radiowave propagation, i can attest to the superheterodine design of the V1 - most others are designed using the same principles but built from cheap components in china or somewhere else in southEast Asia... those component bleed RF signal, and it has been numerous times when my V1 would go off in presense of other car with an Escort or a Passport... this is how the VSS-1 detects the radar detector users in DC and in VA, by catching on the bled signal from the secondary frequency of the superheterodine receiver...

The V1 has metal, grounded shielding that blocks the RF bleeding and as a result, even two V1 detectors in close proximity to each other do not set each other off...

There was a recent firmware update from the V1, that picks up the triteary harmonics of the neighboring radar detectors and cancels the false alarms...

for the price the V1 is of the better value - after all, folks on this forum prefer driving BMWs, even buy them used and not a brand new Kia or something... even though the Kia might have more bells and whistles...

here is my website, that i haven't updated in 10 years or so, but it has some details on the V1 installation...

I am an Escort fanboy... They are made in Canada, no cheap Chinese stuff. As far as I know my 9500 does not leak signals either... In fact; Beltronics, the sister company of Escort, makes a model called the Sti Driver. The Driver is encased in magnesium and thus dot not leak by virtue of magnesium's physical properties.

It looks like I can get the V1 at less than half the price of the Escort Passport 9500ix.
Is really worth the difference?
