You should have full glass coverage so don't pay a deductible.

Most importantly be sure they are not classifying this as a "collision". Since you were moving at the time, they might try to do that. Collision claims will hurt your rates moving forward, glass and comp claims are not surcharge-able.

Crap, thanks for reminding me. I just couldn't remember the word. Acorn. Yup, that is what probably did your glass in.

An acorn could def do it. One chattered the windshield in my CTS. Then again, I was moving forward, compounded with the velocity of the acorn, the impact is much more than if it just fell and hit the roof. Were you going under and underpass by any chance on this road? A lot of country roads in Jersey go under bridges and walking paths. Maybe someone flicked something out of their car and it went over the bridge. Or was someone in front of you? Maybe they kicked up a rock and it took just the right bounce and landed on the top glass.

Nope: none of those things you mentioned were a factor.

But I found out that insurance is going to cover the repairs.
On-site inspection will be required before the X is moved
so that any additional damage caused by transport will be
covered as well.

After having done some research it appears that this issue isn't unusual after all.
BMW tries to blame shattered sunroof on rock, UC professor says otherwise | abc7chicago.com
What this means is that perhaps the acorn theory (at least in my case) doesn't stand up.

Actually no. Read the article, the rock thing is because the rock has to get lifted 15' max. An Acorn, a big ass one, can come down from 80'.

Now what if a sloth was carrying it, and some eagle picked him up, then sloth lost grip, and acorn hit terminal velocity before hitting your roof? Lots of possibilities if you use your imagination.

That article is from 2011, and is not for a pano roof. Still sux, no matter what you do. Try to get BMW to fix it.

Glad to hear your insurance is going to cover the repair. The parts (the glass 54137118847 and 54137118848) aren't too terrible expensive but looking into what is required to replace them, it looks like a bear of a job.

Looks like i'm headed to the dealer. Collision shops would rather not touch it
because the final adjustments have to be done by BMW. In a way I feel better
about what will be a seamless process. This dealer has been an easy fit for
the last 6 years and the SA takes care plenty of business. So I'm hoping for the best.

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
Maybe you could post some photos?

I would go with the acorn or rock theory with glass coverage you should be covered.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck.
