X5 4.6 Build
Well, I know this is REALLY uncharted territory for most, but when my 4.6's rod bearings decided to let go at 107k miles, I couldn't get rid of it. First I was going to do just a new crank and bearings, then it kinda spun out of control.
Specs: Stock bore and stroke 10.5:1 compression Wiseco coated forged pistons Pauter forged I-beam rods Stock crank rebalanced (due to lighter engine components) The motor was built by CSS Motorsports in Newtown, PA. Chuck is extremely knowledgeable and was able to re-do the alusil coating on the block after honing it. Here's some pics of the block all wrapped up in the back of my beater: ![]() ![]() Motor is going in Wednesday and once it's broken in, the next step begins (it's a secret).

Yeah, we'll, thats life. I learned a very important lesson; Mobil 1 and BMWs don't mix.

I changed the oil regularly with Mobil 1 and the bearings were TRASHED. In speaking with a few other people that work on BMWs, they have all said Mobil 1 does not work well with BMWs. The engine builder highly recommended either Amsoil or Redline oil (I'll be running Amsoil from now on).

Yeah, over on bimmerforums...in the racing section, there were long threads years ago about avoiding Mobil 1. From memory, something about their synthetic formula had changed? Not sure if it was a patent issue or what. What weight Amsoil are you going to use papasmurf? FWIW, I also keep hearing that Amsoil is amazing...at least with guys in the racing community. Congrats on your new build. Stickley is the man and I'm sure that build set you back more than a few bucks.

If it was a catastrophic engine failure due to oil quality, I would check first whether your Mobil 1 was real or counterfeit. Same for the filter or any part that could have been substituted. Any parts bought from discount sources can be counterfeit, and Mobil 1 is not immune to it. People were buying Mobil 1 bottles and filling it with any oil.
